Women's Soccer Edged 2-1 by #23 Nationally-Ranked Gordon College

WENHAM, Mass.--After falling to Salem State by a goal two days previous, Gordon's Fighting Scots regained their winning mentality Saturday afternoon, with a thrilling 2-1victory over the Curry Colonels. A last-minute goal from sophomore defender Shelby Palafox (Lexington, Mass.) broke the game's 1-1 tie and boosted Gordon's record to 12-2 on the season, while improving to a perfect 5-0 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.

Gordon's offense was aggressive early, manufacturing three corner kick opportunities in the opening five minutes of play. The Scots' pressure did not let up for the majority of the first half as a variety of scoring opportunities for seniors Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.) and Kendra Woudenberg (Whitinsville, Mass.) were created—all of which rebuffed by the Colonels' scrappy defense.

However, Curry was the first to strike.

With thirteen minutes remaining in the opening half, freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) was tripped inside Gordon's goalie box, setting up an easy penalty kick that Lima buried into the right side of the net.

The Scots answered ten minutes later with a goal of their own. After numerous volleys from Gordon's defensive end deep into Curry's half of the pitch, a cross from freshman Meg Krause (Grand Rapids, Mich.) to sophomore Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.) resulted in a tie score heading into the break.

The Colonels were persistent against the Scots to open the second half, testing sophomore goalkeeper Mckenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) with a barrage of shots—all of which Dion was there to defend.

The contest between the conference rivals remained physical for the meat of the second half, as the two teams traded barbs on offense. After a couple of wide shots and saves from Curry's keeper, the match seemed destined for overtime. But with two minutes left in regulation, the Scots received a final scoring opportunity on a corner kick. The initial offering was deflected towards the midfield where Palafox charged the ball and buried it into the webbing for the deciding goal.

Lima placed six shots on goal for the Colonels, but Dion kept the Scots in the game with eight saves from her post. Curry goalkeeper Hayley Lorge had 12 impressive saves of her own in the defeat.

Curry drops to 6-7 on the year, while falling to 1-4 in CCC contests. Gordon visits Plymouth State University on Wednesday for their final out-of-conference match of the season. That game is set to kick off at 5 p.m. (Game Recap Courtesy of Gordon Sports Information)
