Women's Soccer Tripped up at Emmanuel College, 2-0

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior goalkeeper Jessica D’Ottavio (Pawling, N.Y.) and freshman Jenna Marcello (Hopedale, Mass.) combined for the Saints third consecutive shutout, leading the Emmanuel College women’s soccer team past Curry College, 2-0, Monday evening at Roberto Clemente Field. With t he win, EC improves to 9-4-1 on the year while the loss drops the Colonels to 5-7-1 on the year.

The Saints got the scoring started 23:40 into the contest when junior forward Lindsey Garvey (Warwick, R.I.) played a long cross from the right midfield to junior forward Darcey Sullivan (Dalton, Mass.). Sullivan controlled the ball and fired off a shot from 25 yards out that sail over the head of the Colonels senior keeper Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.) to give EC the 1-0 edge.

Emmanuel would close the opening stanza strong to make it a 2-0 game and take the momentum into halftime when sophomore forward Kelsie Dumas (Dalton, Mass.) chased down a long ball in the corner. Dumas sent a right-football ball into the six-yard box where sophomore forward Amanda Roberts (Hudson, N.H.) hit a one-time volley into the near side of the goal with just 38 seconds left to play in the half to lift the Saints to the two-goal lead.

EC controlled most of the play in the opening frame, outshooting the Colonels 7-1 while owning a 2-0 advantage on corners.

Curry had a great scoring opportunity early in the second half when junior forward Alexsa Hesford (Scituate, R.I.) broke free in the Saints box. Hesford fired a right-footed blast towards the far post but D’Ottavio made a diving save to keep the game at 2-0 in favor of the hosts.

With 28 minutes remaining, Curry College junior forward Brittney McLaughlin (Wilmington, Mass.) had another strong scoring chance when she found herself in a footrace with the Saints backline. The junior was able to control the ball just before the top of the Saints 18-yard box and rip a shot just over the crossbar.

Emmanuel finished the contest with a 22-4 edge in shots and a 7-0 advantage in cornerkicks.

D’Ottavio finished with three saves before Marcello played the final 19+ minutes of the contest making one stop. Hardy played well in net for the Colonels making 11 saves in 76 minutes of action before being relieved by junior Haley Lorge (Beverly, Mass.) for the final 14 minutes of action recording one stop.

The Saints will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 10 when they host Simmons College at 7:00 PM while the Colonels head to Colby-Sawyer for a 3:30 PM matchup in Commonwealth Coast Conference action. (Game Recap Courtesy of Emmanuel Sports Information)
