BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's lacrosse team dropped a close non-conference battle to the Sharks of Simmons College on Tuesday night in Brighton, Mass. With the win, Simmons improves to 4-2 overall on the year, while the Colonels move to 3-2. Over 40 minutes of action elapsed before either team held a two goal lead and an extra period was needed before a winner could be declared.

The Colonels took the first lead of the game after just six minutes had come off the clock, as Andria Torres (Milford, Conn.) scored her first goal of the day and third of the season. Coming off the ensuing draw control, however, Mallory Cottam (Hope, R.I.) found Molly Reinhold (Mystic, Conn.) who netted the equalizer. Curry would retake the lead at 2-1 despite being shorthanded, thanks to a marker from Sharon Doherty (North Easton, Mass.). The lead lasted for nearly seven minutes, but the Sharks would again knot the score, as Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) scored with an assist from Amina Mansouri (Revere, Mass.). The teams would trade scores once more to bring the game to 3-3 after unassisted tallies from Torres and Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.). The Sharks took their first lead of the day with under three minutes remaining in the frame on Cottam's second goal, but Doherty sent the teams to the half all square converting a man-up advantage as the clock expired.

Coming out of the break, it didn't take long for the scoring to resume, as Bragg put the Sharks back on top, this time at 5-4. The momentum soon took a swing, however, as Curry netted the next three scores on goals from Torres, Doherty, and Courtney Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) to open up the first multi-goal lead of the day at 7-5. Simmons brought it back to one with another Reinhold goal, but Lima's second goal in eight minutes extended the lead back out to a pair. The Colonels got an opportunity to extend the advantage further, but stumbled in their pursuit of another insurance goal, as they surrendered a man-down marker to Maiewski with just under five minutes remaining in regulation. Facing another one goal deficit with just 3:49 left to play, Cottam scored her second goal of the contest and brought on the sixth tie of the evening at 8-8. It would be the final tally of regulation, as the teams headed to overtime. However, a Curry yellow card called near the end of regulation had over a minute and a half remaining, which sent the Sharks into the extra period with a player advantage. Simmons possessed the ball throughout the extra stanza, which led to two players posting their third points of the tilt. Just 64 seconds into overtime, a helper from Maiewski made its way to Bragg who closed out the game with a hat trick and a victory.

Torres topped the score sheet in the losing effort, registering four points (3 goals, 1 assist) and picking up three ground balls. Abby Dubel (Wolfeboro, N.H.) won five ground balls, but was held scoreless for the first time in four appearances this season. Goalie Jessica Ginaitt (Warwick, R.I.) added nine saves to her season total as Simmons put 90% of their total shots on goal. Doherty also nabbed a hat trick for the Colonels with a trio of goals. Bragg led Simmons with three scores of her own, while Maiewski, Reinhold, and Cottam scored a pair of goals each. Cat Cross (Beverly, Mass.) racked up 18 saves on the evening to lock up the victory.

The Colonels will play again later in the week as the Emmanuel College Saints come to Milton for a 6:00 p.m. start on Thursday, March 21. The Sharks will head to Regis College on Saturday, March 23 as they resume their Great Northeast Athletic Conference slate. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Weston, Mass.
