Women's Lacrosse Shuts Out Dean in Season Opener

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's lacrosse team shut out Dean College, 21-0 in their season home opener on Wednesday night at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the win, the Colonels improve to 1-0 overall while the Bulldogs slip to 0-1.

Curry was led offensively by a seven-point effort from freshman Sharon Doherty (North Easton, Mass.).  Sophomore Katie Tarr (Atkinson, N.H.) followed with five points on three goals and two assists. Sophomore Katie Parker (Branford, Conn.) and junior Abby Dubel (Wolfeboro, N.H.) each finished with four goals apiece. Sophomore Taylor Gallagher (Rockland, Mass.) added a hat trick while junior Kayla Merritt (Attleboro, Mass.) pitched in two goals to round out the scoring. Dubel also led all players with nine draw controls and nine ground balls. Dubel, junior Courtney Lima (New Bedford, Mass.), and freshman Maggie Murray (Marstons Mills, Mass.) were strong defensively causing three turnovers each.

The Colonels scored 10 goals in the first 18:05 of the contest. Gallagher opened the onslaught with an unassisted marker. Doherty added four, Gallagher had three, while Dubel, Parker, and Tarr each pitched in one apiece to give Curry a double-digit lead. The Colonels were not done in the first half as they would find the back of the net five more times. Dubel had two, Merritt with one, and Parker with two goals over the final 8:43 of the opening stanza.

Curry was not done in the scoring column as they tacked on six more in the second half. Doherty capped off her collegiate debut with her final goal of the contest with 27:19 remaining. Tarr scored two more in the final half of regulation while Dubel and Parker closed out the scoring for the Colonels.

For Dean, sophomore Lauryn Wilks (Hartford, Conn.) registered her team's only shot of the night.  Senior Makayla Fisher (Irvington, N.J.) had a team-high three draw controls.

Curry's freshman goalkeeper Jessica Ginaitt (Warwick, R.I.) earned the first win of her collegiate career in net making one saves.  The Bulldogs' senior goalkeeper Jamaya Cleveland (Greensboro, Ga.) recorded 14 stops in the loss.

Curry is next in action on Thursday night as they host Salem State in a 5:30 p.m. start. Dean will travel to Nichols on Saturday, March 9 for a 1:00 p.m. draw.
