Women's Lacrosse Downs Newbury 22-1 in Season Opener

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's lacrosse team defeated Newbury College, 22-1 in their season home opener on Tuesday night at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the win the Colonels improve to 1-0 overall.  The Nighthawks fall to 0-2 on the season.

The Colonels enjoyed six-point efforts from three different players.  Sophomore Leona Stevens (Kingston, Mass.) led all goal scorers with four and had two assists.  Sophomore Abigail Roy (Nashua, N.H.) tallied her first career hat-trick and also had three helpers while classmate Abby Dubel (Wolfeboro, N.H.) netted two and dished in a career-high four assists.  Dubel also led all players with 13 draw controls, eight ground balls and six caused turnovers.  Roy was also strong defensively causing five turnovers.

The Colonels had nine other scorers, six with multiple points.  Sophomore Courtney Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) had a career-high five points on two goals and three assists. Freshman Katie Parker (Branford, Conn.) was solid on attack as she netted her first collegiate hat trick while dishing in an assist for four points.  Junior Jessica Giametti (Branford, Conn.) had a career-high three points on two goals and an assist.  Three freshman finished the night with two points as Lily Ashford (Atkinson, N.H), Allie Wysocki (South Hadley, Mass.) and Taylor Gallagher (Rockland, Mass.) each scored their first collegiate goals.  Wysocki netted two while both Ashford and Gallagher had a tally and a helper.  Rounding out the scoring was senior Bianca Simeone (Cranston, R.I.), sophomore Kayla Merritt (Attleboro, Mass.) and freshman Colleen Donnelly (Atkinson, N.H.). Donnelly's goal was her first in a Colonel uniform.

For Newbury, freshman Venezia Delgadillo (Sharon, Mass.) scored her team's only goal of the night.  She also had a team high five draw controls and three caused turnovers.

The Colonels freshman goalkeeper Amy Collard (Lakeville, Mass.) earned her first win of her collegiate career in net making two saves.  The Nighthawks freshman goalkeeper Keely Molly (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded 12 stops in the loss.

Curry is next in action on Thursday night as they travel to Salem State for a 7 p.m. start.
