Women's Lacrosse Team Participates in Annual Ovarian Cancer 5K Run/Walk

MILTON, Mass. – On Saturday, September 17, the Women's Lacrosse Team participated in the seventh annual 5k Run/Walk for Ovarian Cancer.  This was the team's fifth year volunteering for this event.  The squad departed the Curry campus at 5:00 a.m. and headed to Centerville's Craigville Beach located on Cape Cod.  This very special event called, "Girlygirl P.A.R.T.S", is to raise awareness for ovarian cancer.

There were over 1200 people this year (the biggest group yet) which included the founders, committee, members of Dana Farber, sponsors from all over, race participants and volunteers including the women's lacrosse team.  Prior to the race the team along with the other volunteers, helped set up four separate tents; one for registration, one for the silent auction, one for food and water and the most special one, a memory tent .  They also helped with registration, set up tables and put up beautiful decorations inside the tents and around the common area.  During the race, the team had various jobs to do including directing the runners and walkers, cheering them on along the race trail and finish line, handing out waters and presenting awards to the winners after the race.  The most rewarding part of that day for our team was watching them interact with the women who have been battling this devastating disease, those recently diagnosed and the survivors.  It meant a lot to those women to have them there.

The Volunteer Coordinator, Mary Beth McLaughlin, was quoted on the Girlygirl P.A.R.T.S.  web page saying, "Thank you to the 20 members of the Curry College Lacrosse team who drove down from Boston very, very early Saturday morning.  The committee extends our gratitude and thanks to all our volunteers.  We couldn't do it without you."

Girlygirl P.A.R.T.S stands for: Pre-Screening, Awareness, Required, To, Silence…ovarian cancer.
