WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Women's Lacrosse celebrated Senior Day with a 14-10 victory over visiting Curry on Saturday at the Brigham Athletic Complex. Senior Jessica Castelline (Concord, Mass.) crept even closer to becoming the all-time points leader in program history with seven goals and two assists in the win.
The Fighting Scots got a big boost in its playoff seeding, improving to 5-2 in the conference and 6-8 overall. The Colonels fell to 3-4 in the CCC, but have already clinched at least the sixth seed in next week's tourney. Curry is 10-6 overall.
The Fighting Scots started fast, scoring the game's first four goals over the opening 20 minutes to take control. Bailey Grinnell (S. Hamilton, Mass.) capitalized a free-position attempt less than three minutes in and the Scots did not look back in time-dominated first half.
Castelline scored her first of the game 45 seconds after Grinnell's opener off the pass from Olivia McCarrick (Glen Burnie, Md.). McCarrick got in on the action her self at the midway point of the half before Grinnell scored again for the four-goal advantage. Hannah Bourk (Barrington, R.I.) assisted on the third and fourth goals of the game.
Curry put a point on the scoreboard in the 19th minute when Kelly Parker (Branford, Conn.) finished a transition pass from Rachael Lawrence (Hanover, Mass.).
However, Gordon's methodical offensive approach led by Castelline and McCarrick added three more goals before the end of the half for a 7-1 halftime lead.
The Fighting Scots were just as crisp in the second half, going up by as many nine goals when Caroline Walton (Irvine, Calif.) put home a free-position with 16:58 to go in regulation.
Curry's offense found a spark late thanks to the trio of Abby Carnevale (Beverly, Mass.), Malorie Knowlton (Norfolk, Mass.) and Parker. Each finished off a hat-trick in the second half and spurred a 7-2 run to end the game, but the rally fell short.
Zita Nagel (Wayland, Mass.) performed well in net for the Fighting Scots, earning her second win of the season with 10 saves. Annie Douglas (Manchester, N.H.) stopped three Gordon shots in the loss.
Gordon finished off four of its six free-position attempts, while Curry went 0-for-7, an important stat in the end result.
