Women's Lacrosse Tripped up by Gordon College in CCC action, 9-7

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's lacrosse team lost to Gordon College at Walter M. Katz Field on Wednesday night, 9-7. With the loss the Colonels fall to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.  With the win the Fighting Scots improve to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in CCC play.

Sophomore midfielder Malorie Knowlton led the Colonels with three goals while junior defenseman Alexis Cran added a goal and an assist. Freshman midfielder Brook Harrington, sophomore midfielder Kelly Parker and sophomore attack Lauren Carroll each recorded a goal in the loss.

Junior midfielder Baily Grinnell led all scorers on the night with six points on two goals and four assists for the Scots. Junior midfielder Jessica Castelline netted four goals and senior attack Abbby Illian added two goals in the victory.

The Scots jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first seven minutes of the game with goals from Grinnell and Castelline. The Colonels responded back with two goals of their own from Cran and Knowlton to tie the game at two. With 8:51 remaining in the first half, Gordon took the lead on a tally from Illian assisted by sophomore midfielder MC Aston. Curry scored the last two of the half, coming just two minutes apart from each other one, from Knowlton and Harrington to take a 4-3 advantage heading into break.

The Colonels started off the second frame with a net by Knowlton at the 25:49 mark to extend the Curry lead to 5-3. The Scots answered with a goal from Illian just 39 seconds after Curry. Grinnell and Castelline each scored 26 seconds apart to regain a 6-5 edge with just over 21 minutes remaining in the game. Parker and Carroll each netted a score for the Colonels to give them the 7-6 edge with 16:22 left on the clock. The Scots then went on to tally three unanswered goals, one from Castelline at 10:11, one by senior midfielder Megan Avery at 9:04 and the last from Castelline with just 1:52 left in regulation.  The Colonels had a couple good chances to tie but strong play by Gordon's defense held them scoreless. 

The Colonels senior goalkeeper, Christina Wallis recorded five saves in the loss. Sophomore netminder, Jackie Kiernan recorded 11 stops for the win.

Curry is next in action when they host Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Western New England on Saturday, April 11 at 3:30 pm. Gordon College will visit non-conference opponent M.I.T on Friday, April 10 at 6:00 pm.
