BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) netted a free-position shot just 29 seconds into overtime, and it held up for the only goal of the extra session as the University of New England defeated Curry College, 12-11, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's lacrosse action Tuesday night (Apr. 15) at the Big Blue Turf.

The Nor'easters (8-6) level their conference ledger at 3-3 with the victory, while the Colonels (8-7) dip back to 2-4 in CCC games. On par with the previous four meetings between the programs (2 wins each), it was fifth straight time the deciding margin was three goals or less.

After a 5-1 start for UNE was answered with five consecutive scores for Curry, Newsome brought Big Blue back even midway through the 1st half and the hosts never trailed again. The separation reached as high as three (11-8) for the Nor'easters with 17 minutes left in the 2nd half, but the visitors registered the next three goals to tie it, and the sides played the final six minutes of regulation deadlocked at 11-all.

UNE began overtime down a player, but got the edge it needed when Newsome tucked her 8-meter shot just inside the left post. The Nor'easters managed to survive the remaining card time, as well as a stretch of being two players down for 76 seconds in the closing moments, to secure the decision.

Sophomore goalie Courtney Kendall (Waltham, Mass.) matched her season-high of 17 saves to backstop the win, which included stops on seven of the Colonels' 11 free-position attempts. UNE finished on the wrong side of a 41-25 margin in shots.

Newsome ended with a match-best six points on three goals and three assists. Senior Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) added four goals, and junior Jessica Deedon (Sherman, Conn.) notched a pair. In addtion to scoring once, junior Rachel Schwaner (Holderness, N.H.) had four caused turnovers. Senior Cassidy Ruocco (Dover, N.H.) and first-year Jocelyn Davee (Freeport, Maine) each had three more caused turnovers.

For Curry, first-year Alli Schoff (Berwick, Maine) led the way with four markers, while seniors Kaitlin Cloutier (Montpelier, Vt.) and Kelly Ethier (Merrimack, N.H.) went for three and two, respectively. Senior Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) helped the Colonels to a 16-9 advantage in draws with seven, and recorded four caused turnovers. Sophomore Alexis Cran (Branford, Conn.) came up with game-highs of six ground balls and five caused turnovers. Senior Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) and first-year Malorie Knowlton (Norfolk, Mass.) had seven draws and six caused turnovers between them.

Big Blue limited Carey and Brickey -- Curry's two leading scorers accounting for nearly six goals per contest on the year -- to just two assists.

Between the pipes for the visiting squad, junior Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.) turned away five shots over the initial 50 minutes before giving way to sophomore Kelton Vuilleumier (Duxbury, Mass.), who made three saves the rest of the way.

UNE stays at home through Saturday, when CCC-leading Western New England University comes into Biddeford. The Nor'easters and unbeaten Golden Bears are slated to start at 1 p.m.
