Carey's Season-High Seven Goals Leads Women's Lacrosse Past Visiting Norwich, 16-3

MILTON, Mass. – Senior Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) scored a season-high seven goals to help the Curry women's lacrosse team earn its fourth-straight win with a 16-3 victory over Norwich on Thursday night in Milton, Mass.  With the win, the Colonels improve to 8-5 while the Cadets fell to 5-3 on the season.

Curry scored the game's first two goals in just over three minutes into the opening half.  Carey netted both goals for the Colonels before Norwich would get on the board.  Just 37 seconds after Carey's goal, the Cadets senior Baylie Lamarre (Tyngsboro, Mass.) tallied her team's first on a free position shot.  Curry had three more markers off the sticks of Carey, senior Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) and freshman Malorie Knowlton (Norfolk, Mass.).  At the 10:58 minute mark senior Grace Fitzpatrick (Falmouth, Maine) earned her first of two on the night after she took the ball to net herself and shot it over the shoulder of Curry's junior goaltender Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.).  The Colonels extended their lead to five after netting the final two goals of the stanza.  Carey scored 46 seconds after Fitzpatrick and Knowlton took her team into the break with a 7-2 advantage with 20 seconds showing on the clock.

Curry went into the final half tallying the first two goals.  Both were scored on man-down situations and just 12 seconds apart.  Norwich had possession of the ball and had the man-up advantage in their attacking end.  But junior Alexis Cran (Branford, Conn.) caused a turnover and got the ball back.  Cran ran it up the sideline and into the Colonel's offensive end.  Carey saw an opening and took the ball herself to net her fifth of the game.  Brickey won the following draw control and sent a pass to freshman Alli Schoff (Berwick, Maine).  Scoff assisted senior Kelly Ethier (Merrimack, N.H.) on her first on the night.  Fitzpatrick added her second and team's final with 22:41 left to play.  Solid play by the Curry defense held the Cadets scoreless over the final minutes of regulation.  The Colonels went on a seven goal run to close out the game and come away with a 16-3 victory.  During the span, Carey had two while Cran, Schoff, Brickey and senior Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Rachael Lawrence (Hanover, Mass.) all had one.

Cran led the team in groundballs with five and in caused turnovers with a career-high of eight.  She also won two draw controls and had a goal and chipped in with an assist.  Brickey led all players with nine draw controls.  She also caused six turnovers, scooped up five groundballs and had five points on two goals and three assists.  Fitzpatrick led Norwich with two points on two tallies, won two draws, two groundballs and had two caused turnovers.

Carey finished with seven goals, Brickey had two goals and three assists, Schoff and Monfredo each had three points on a goal and two helpers.  Three Colonels finished with two points with Knowlton netting two goals and Cran and Lawrence finishing with a tally and an assist.  Ethier rounded out the scoring with one goal.

Wallis made six saves in net for Curry in the win.  Senior Irene Okubo (Chicago, Ill.) made nine saves allowing 14 goals over the first 49:55 minutes of play before giving way to junior Rebecca Horgan (Topsfield, Mass.) who made two saves and allowed two goals over the final 10:05.
