Women's Lacrosse Downs Wheelock College, 22-7

MILTON, Mass. – In a non-conference match-up the Curry College Women's Lacrosse team defeated Wheelock College, 22-7.  With the win the Colonels improve to 6-5 overall, while the Wildcats fell to 1-4 on the season. 

The Colonels had eight different goal scorers and 10 point scorers on the night.  Senior Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) led Curry with 12 points on six goals and six assists. Her 12 points were a career-high for the senior. She also won 17 of 31 total draws and caused four turnovers.  Junior Katie Gavin (Manchester-by-the-sea, Mass.) led Wheelock netting five goals for five points. 

The Colonels scored the first four goals of the night, led by a trio of scores.  Brickey and senior Kelly Ethier (Manchester, N.H.) each had one and freshman Alli Schoff (Berwick, Maine) tallied two. The Wildcats answered back with two in a row both off the stick of Gavin.  Curry extended their lead to 11-2 after netting seven goals over the span of five minutes.  Curry got two from both Brickey and freshman Malorie Knowlton (Norfolk, Mass.) and one each from Schoff and sophomores Emma Bolton (Saddle River, N.J.) and Alexis Cran (Branford, Conn.).  Gavin scored unassisted at the 5:05 minute mark, her third in the game to make it 11-3.  The Colonels however put up three more before the break to head into halftime with a 14-3 advantage.  Senior Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) earned two while freshman Rachael Lawrence (Hanover, Mass.) netted one.   Eight of Curry's 14 goals were off assists.  Brickey and senior Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) each chipped in with three, Carey two and Bolton, Schoff, senior Kaitlin Cloutier (Montpelier, Vt.) and freshman Kelly Parker (Branford, Conn.) helped with one each.  All three of the Wildcats goals were unassisted.   

The Colonels used a settled attack over the final 30 minutes of play and used that time to hold possession. All of Curry's eight second-half goals were off the sticks of teammates.  Curry went on a six goal run to start the stanza before Wheelock got on the board.  The teams then exchanged goals before the Colonels finished with their last at 2:46 showing on the clock.  The Wildcats netted the last two, the first with 1:31 remaining and the second with just 20 seconds left to play.  Brickey and Carey both netted three with Knowlton and Lawrence earning one.  Brickey also assisted on another three while Monfredo and Bolton helped on two and Schoff one.  Gavin netted two more for Wheelock and freshman Haley Lary (Randolf, Vt.) rounded out the Wildcats scoring with two of her own.

The Colonels were 29-31 on draw controls, outshot the Wildcats 57-13 and held a 22-2 advantage in groundballs.   

Sophomore goaltender Anne Douglas (Manchester, N.H.) turned away six shots and was a perfect 7-7 on clears to earn the win for Curry. Freshman goalie Meghan Lewis (South Berwick, Maine) had an impressive game between the pipes for Wheelock making 23 saves in the loss.

Curry travels to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent, Wentworth on Wednesday, April 9 at 4:00 p.m.  Wheelock will be in action again on Thursday, April 10 when they travel to Anna Maria for a conference match-up at 7:00 p.m.
