Women's Lacrosse Earns First Conference Win of the Season 15-3 Over Salve Regina

MILTON, Mass. – In a Commonwealth Coast match-up on Thursday afternoon, Curry College defeated visiting Salve Regina, 15-3, in women's lacrosse action in Milton, Mass.  With the win, the Colonels even out their overall record to 5-5 and improve to 1-2 in the conference.  The Seahawks fell to 3-8 overall and 0-4 in the CCC.

Curry got on the board just 36 seconds into the opening frame and went on to score five more to take a demanding six goal lead.  The Colonels defense, along with junior goaltender Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.) kept Salve scoreless until the 7:06 minute mark.  That would be the only score the Seahawks would be able to put up in the 30 minutes of play.  Curry's attack wasn't finished as they answered back 46 seconds later.  They possessed the ball for the remainder of the half and tallied two more, one with 1:30 showing on the score board and their final with 15 seconds left to head into the break with a 9-1 advantage.

The Colonels had five different scorers on their nine goals.  Six of their tallies were assisted; two were on free positions shots leaving just one unassisted.   Curry got three from sophomore Emma Bolton (Mahwah, N.J.), two from both senior Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) and freshman Malorie Knowlton (Norfolk, Mass.) and one each from senior Deana Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Alli Schoff (Berwick, Maine).  Salve's lone tally was from junior Sarah Woods (East Lyme, Conn.).

The Colonels extended their lead to 14-1 by scoring the first five goals in the second half.  Curry was able to hold off Salve until last two minutes of the game.  With 1:56 showing on the clock, Salve netted their second on the day and with 46 seconds left they finished with their third and final goal.  The Colonels earned one more for the 15-1 victory with 10 seconds left in regulation.

Curry's Carey, Knowlton, Schoff and seniors Kelly Ethier (Merrimack, N.H.) and Kaitlin Cloutier (Montpelier, Vt.) and sophomore Kayli Travassos (Cumberland, R.I.) each netted one.  For Salve, sophomore Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) and freshman Kaitlin Gillespie (Haddam, Conn.) earned their team's second and third goal.

The Colonels had three different players earning hat tricks.  Carey, Knowlton and Bolton all finished the day with three goals apiece.  Carey led both teams with five points on three tallies and two helpers.  Knowlton was second in line with four points on three goals and one helper.  Senior Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) was solid on defense and in the midfield. She won 13 of 20 total draw controls, scooped up five ground balls, caused four turnovers and also chipped in with two assists.

Wallis made 11 saves for Curry in the win.  Sophomore Josephine O'Reilly (Middletown, R.I.) had 10 stops in net for the Seahawks in the loss.

Curry returns to non-conference action on Monday as they host Wheelock College in a 7:00 p.m. game.  Salve plays host to conference opponent Western New England for a 12:00 p.m. start.
