MILTON, Mass. –Curry College lost 17-16, in triple overtime to visiting Lasell College, in women's lacrosse action on Thursday afternoon in Milton, Mass. With the loss, the Colonels fall to 1-2 overall, while the Lancers even out to 1-1.
Curry got scores from seven different players while Lasell had six. The Colonels were led offensively by senior Haley Carey (New Milford, Mass.) who finished with six points on five goals and an assist. Defensively, senior Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) had a solid effort causing five turnovers, picking up 11 out of the teams 24 draw control wins and scooping up seven ground balls. She also netted two goals. For Lasell, junior Caitlyn Brecher (Cheshire, Conn.) finished with five goals for five points and senior Brittney Wuorio (Bolton, Mass.) also had five points on four goals and an assist. Defensively, sophomore Lisi Anczok (Buffalo, N.Y.) caused six turnovers, won five draw controls and scooped up four ground balls. She also tallied a goal.
The Lancers got on the board first at the 23:13 minute mark. The Colonels tied it up but Lasell went on a five goal run to take a 6-1 lead. Curry netted two back to back tallies to cut the deficit. With just five minutes remaining on the clock, the Lancers increased their lead again by tallying two more. With the scoreboard showing an 8-3 score with just 30 seconds remaining in the half, the Colonels netted two more of their own. The goals were scored just 18 seconds apart with the last one at 11 seconds left to play.
In the opening stanza, Lasell got four goals from Brecher, two by sophomore Bridget Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) and one from sophomore Toni Minelli (Newington, Conn.). The Colonels Carey had two along with classmate Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Rachael Lawrence (Hanover, Mass.). Curry outshot Lasell 23-14 while winning 9 out of the 15 draws.
The second half proved to be a very exciting 30 minutes. 17 total goals were scored between the two teams. The Lancers opened the scoring with the Colonels answering right back. Lasell netted four in a row to take their biggest lead of the game with a score of 13-6. Curry would not give up however as they went on to net nine in the last 12 minutes while Lasell found the back of the net just twice. Carey cut the lead down to one at the 2:11 minute mark. The Lancers won the following draw and help possession of the ball in hopes to end the game with a 15-14 score. Brickey however caused a huge turnover and got the ball back to her team's offensive end. She sent a pass to Carey and while going to net was fouled. Head Coach Caitlin Roberts took a time out with 34 seconds left in regulation. The team went back on the field and Carey took advantage of the foul, ran the ball to goal and tied the game sending the teams into overtime.
In the second half, Carey found the back of the net three times including the last two, Brickey and freshmen Malorie Knowlton (Norfolk, Mass.) and Alli Schoff (Berwick, Maine) each tallied two and sophomore Emma Bolton (Mahwah, N.J.) had one for a team total of 10. Lasell netted seven, two by Wuorio and sophomore Ashlee Pechulis (Westfield, Mass.) and one each by Anczok, Brecher and sophomore Ashley Gleason (Suffield, Conn.) for a team total of seven. The Colonels outshot the Lancers again, this time 26-14 and also won 12 to their six draws.
Once again Lasell was able to get on the board first in the opening three minute overtime. Wuorio scored just a minute in and the team held possession for most of the time. It was until a Curry save and a long clear that they were able to get the ball back for one more chance at tying the score. Monfredo saw an opportunity and took it with 18 seconds remaining to tie the game at 16 apiece. Neither team was able to score over the second overtime sending them into sudden death. Lasell won the last draw of the game which proved to be the most important as they ran it down to their offensive zone. It took them just 23 seconds and one shot to take the victory. It was Wuorio who netted the game-winner.
Wuorio tallied two in the overtimes while Curry's Monfredo scored for the Colonels.
Final shots were 52-32 Curry. The Colonels won 24 draw controls while the Lancers picked up 13. Curry was also successful on ground balls scooping up 28 to Lasells 20.
The Colonels played two goaltenders with sophomore Kelton Vuilleumier (Duxbury, Mass.) making four saves, allowing 13 goals. Junior Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.) made two saves allowing four goals in the Colonel's loss. The Lancers junior netminder Alexa Katsigianis(Amherst, N.H.) earned the win making 13 saves in 69 minutes.
Curry travels to West Palm Beach and will be back in action on Monday, March 10 for a 7:30 p.m. game start against St. Lawrence. Lasell will host Wellesley College on March 8 in a 12:00 p.m. start.
