Bottary Earns 100th Point of the Season While the Colonels are Edged 20-17 Against Conference Rival Western New England

MILTON, Mass. – In a conference match-up on Saturday evening, Curry College lost to Western New England, 20-17.  With the win the Golden Bears improve to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.  The Colonels fell to 12-4 overall and 4-3 in CCC. 

Curry was led by senior Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.) and junior Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) who both finished the day with six points, Bottary netted four goals and chipped in with two assists.  She also became the sixth member of the Colonels’ lacrosse team to earn 100 points in a season.  Carey finished with six goals.   Western New England's senior Megan Doyle (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) led her team with eight points on seven goals and one assist. Doyle was followed by sophomore Jessica Scannapieco (Blue Bell, Pa.) who ended with six points on two goals and four assists. 

For Curry freshman Emma Bolton (Saddle River, N.J.) scored two goals and helped on one for three points.   Juniors Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) netted two goals and Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist for two points each.  Junior Caity Tobyne (Hamilton, Mass.) and freshman Felicia Vieira (Bristol, R.I.) each had one to round out the scoring.    

Western New England’s freshman Brooke Kumnick (Grandby, Conn.) tallied five goals.  Sophomore Kaitlyn Stevens (Stratford, Conn.) finished with four points on two and two.  Freshmen Taylor Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Tori Cirocco (Carmel, N.Y.) racked up three points each.  Scialdone netted three goals, while Cirocco assisted on three.  Senior Julianne Green (Brightwaters, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist.  Freshman Kaleigh Cannon (West Hartford, Conn.) earned one goal while teammates, junior Kelsey Sherman (Buchanan, N.Y.) and freshman Bethany Peters (Baiting Hollow, N.Y.) had an assist.

The Colonels got on the board first at the 27:44 minute mark but the Golden Bears tied it up just 45 seconds later.  Curry regained the lead a minute later but Western New England reeled off six to go up 7-2.  The Colonels took a time out to regroup and tallied the next three to cut the lead.  Both teams netted three in a row with the Golden Bears scoring the first three followed by the Colonels three.  Western New England scored at 8:58 for their 11th of the half.  Curry tallied their ninth but the Golden Bears netted their final of the frame just 18 seconds later.  The Colonels posted two more before the end to head into break down by just one.  The score after 30 minutes was 12-11 in favor of the visitors. 

Western New England started the second half with the opening goal.  Curry answered back four minutes later. The teams exchanged tallies a minute a part from each other before the Golden Bears went on a six goal scoring spree.   Curry was able to net the last three of the game but it wasn’t enough as Western New England took the 20-17 victory. 

Earning the win in the cage for Western New England was sophomore Melissa Perry (Somers, Conn.) who made 12 saves allowing 12 goals in 45:32 minutes.  Perry replaced the Golden Bears starting keeper, sophomore Emily Castleman (Wilbraham, Mass.) who made two saves and allowed two goals in 14:24 minutes.  Curry’s sophomore netminder  Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.), started the game and played in 23:52 minutes, allowing 12 goals and making six saves.  Freshman Kelton Vuilleumier (Duxbury, Mass.) played in goal for 36:06 minutes and allowed eight goals and stopped five shots.

Curry returns to action on Wednesday, April 24 when they host conference opponent University of New England in their final game of the regular season for a 4:00 p.m. game.  Western New England hosts conference opponent Endicott also in their last regular season game on Wednesday, April 24 in a 4:00 p.m. start.
