Women's Lacrosse Downs Conference Foe Wentworth, 20-5

MILTON, Mass. – In a conference match-up on Wednesday evening, Curry College defeated Wentworth, 20-5.  With the win the Colonels improve to 9-3 overall and even out at 2-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.  The Leopards fell to 1-7 overall, and 0-5 in the CCC.

Curry was led by senior Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.) and junior Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.), who finished the night with seven points each.  Bottary netted three goals and chipped in with four assists.  Brickey tallied four and helped on three.  Brickey also won 10 draw controls and caused seven turnovers.  Wentworth's sophomore Jessica Houghton (Billerica, Mass.) led her team with three points on three goals.  She also won five of her team’s nine draw controls.

The Colonels had seven other scorers.  Junior Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) was the top goal scorer tallying five.  Junior Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) put up three, while juniors Kaitlin Cloutier (Montpelier, Vt.), Kelly Ethier (Merrimack, N.H.) and freshmen Kayli Travassos (Cumberland, R.I.), Felicia Vieira (Bristol, R.I.) and Emma Bolton (Saddle River, N.J.) each chipped in with one.  Bolton also contributed with two assists for three points.  Junior Bridget McDonald (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Colby Lowell (Marshfield, Mass.) each chipped in with an assist. The Leopards got tallies from senior Lisa Piccirillo (Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore Julie Azzinaro (Westerly, R.I.).  Senior Meg Ferro (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman Pam Mudge (Pembroke, N.H.) both had two helpers and sophomore Beverly Harris (Palmer, Mass.) had one.

Earning the win in the cage for Curry was sophomore keeper Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.), who made two saves and allowed two goals in 19:57 minutes of play.  Curry played both their freshman netminders.  Kelton Vuilleumier (Duxbury, Mass.) stopped two allowing one in 18:13 minutes and Annie Douglas (Manchester, N.H.) made three saves and allowed two goals to finish out the game, playing in net for 21:50 minutes.  Taking the loss in goal for Wentworth was freshman Hayley Patton (Cranston, R.I.) who made nice stops.

The Leopards jumped out to an early lead just 26 seconds into the contest.  Houghton won the opening draw and sent a pass to Mudge who connected with Azzinaro.  The Colonels went on to score the next eight goals before Wentworth stopped the bleeding with their second of the night.  Curry outscored Wentworth 7-1 over the next 12 minutes to play in the opening frame to head into the break, up 15-3.  The Leopards Houghton and Piccirillo tallied for their team.  Six Colonels netted goals with Carey leading on four, Bottary, Brickey and Monfredo firing three apiece and Ethier and Vieira scoring one. 
 
Curry netted five more in the second half and was able to keep possession and hold Wentworth to just two more. The Leopards fifth came with just nine seconds left to play.  Cloutier, Brickey, Bolton and Carey got on the board for their team and Travassos netted her first collegiate goal for the 20-5 victory.  Houghton was credited with her team’s final two tallies.  

Curry returns to action on Saturday, April 13 when they travel to conference opponent Nichols College for a 2:30 p.m. game.  Wentworth hosts conference opponent Western New England on April 16 for a 7:00 p.m. start.
