Women's Lacrosse Defeats Salem State, 13-9

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College defeated visiting Salem State University, 13-9 on Monday night in Milton.  With the win the Colonels improve to 6-1 overall, while the Vikings fell to 1-2 on the season.

Senior Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.) led the Colonels with five points on three goals and two assists and junior Kaitlin Cloutier (Montpelier, Vt.) had a career-high four goals.  On defense, junior Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) caused four turnovers, scooped up four ground balls and won 15 draw controls.  Freshman Alexis Cran was also solid on defense causing six turnovers, scooping up four ground balls, winning three draw controls and chipped in with a goal.  

For the Vikings, senior Kristin Cahoon (Reading, Mass.) led with four goals.  Sophomore Kelsey Russell (Arlington, Mass.) followed with three points on a goal and an assist.  On defense, sophomore Rachel Clasby (Northbridge, Mass.) won three groundballs and earned five draw controls.

The Colonels were the first to strike just under two minutes into the game.  The Vikings answered back with two of their own to take a 2-1 lead.  Curry evened the game at two but Salem tallied another just seconds later.  The Colonels went on a three goal scoring spree to go up 5-3.  The Vikings would net two more before the half ended and Curry one more as the teams went into break with the Colonels up 6-5. 

Salem netted the first two goals to begin the second half just 22 seconds apart from each other and regain the lead.  That would be the last time the Vikings would be in control of the game. Curry went on another three goal scoring frenzy before Salem would get on the board again.  The teams traded goals over the next two minutes but solid defense from the Colonels and sophomore goaltender Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.) held the Vikings scoreless in the final 12 minutes of play.  The Colonels tallied three more before the end of regulation for the 13-9 victory.

Curry also got scores from juniors Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) and Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.).  Salem State got goals from senior Bridget Dullea (Peabody, Mass.), junior Alexandra Smith (Norwell, Mass.) and sophomore Kristin Caso (Framingham, Mass.).

Wallis finished with seven stops in goal for the win.  Freshman netminder Alex Varoutsos (Woburn, Mass.) made 14 saves for the Vikings in the loss.

Curry will travel to Endicott College in their first CCC match-up of the season on Wednesday, March 27 at 4:00 p.m.  Salem State will host Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday, March 27 in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
