Women's Lacrosse Downs Manhattanville, 19-7

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College defeated visiting Manhattanville, 19-7 on Friday afternoon in Milton.  With the win the Colonels improve to 5-1 overall, while the Valiants fell to 1-6 on the season.

Senior Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.) led Curry with nine points on five goals and four assists.  On defense, junior Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) caused five turnovers, scooped up seven ground balls and won 11 draw controls.  Brickey also netted four goals and chipped in with an assist for five points.   Junior Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) led Manhattanville with four goals.  Honovich also won five draw controls and picked up five ground balls.

The Valiants came out strong to start the game netting the first two scores to take an early 2-0 lead.  Just 23 seconds in, Honovich tallied her first on a free position shot after a Colonel foul in the 8 meter.  Minutes later she received a pass from senior Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y.).  The Colonels won the draw and got on the board when junior Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) scored her first of four on the night.  Junior Kaitlin Cloutier (Montpelier, Vt.) was sent the ball from Brickey off the draw and saw an open Carey in front of the net.  The Valiants answered back on another free position goal, this time from Goncalves.  The Colonels netted the next three to take the 5-4 lead.  Carey and Brickey and freshman Emma Bolton (Saddle River, N.J.) earned the points.  Senior Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.) and Carey were credited with assists on two of the goals.  Manhattanville tied the game at 5-5 after junior Brooke Marcimo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) received a pass from freshman Charlotte Smith (West Bath, Maine).  Curry tallied another three straight from Cloutier, Carey and Brickey.  Bottary and junior Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) each had a helper.  The Valiants scored back-to-back goals within 42 seconds of each other to come within one but that would be the end of their scoring.  Goncalves finished with two on the night and Honovich with four.  Curry ended the half up 9-7 with just 1:19 showing on the clock.  Manhattanville was called for shooting space and Monfredo shot the ball off the whistle into the back of the net.

Solid defense from the Colonels and sophomore goaltender Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.) held the Valiants scoreless in the final frame and Curry went on to net 10 more for the 19-7 victory.  In the scoring frenzie, Bottary had four, Monfredo and Brickey each had two and Carey and junior Kelly Ethier (Merrimack, N.H.) chipped in with one apiece.

Wallis finished with a career-high seven stops in goal for the win.  Sophomore netminder Kristen Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn.) made 14 saves for the Valiants in the loss.
