Women's Lacrosse Falls to Lasell 13-12 in Season Opener

Newton, Mass. (3/1/13) – The Lasell College women’s lacrosse program opened the 2013 campaign with a non-conference win at home against Curry College, 13-12 in the opening game for both teams.

The Lasers were led by junior Britney Wuorio (Bolton, Mass.) who recorded four goals and an assist on night. Senior captain, Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, Mass.) also contributed for the Lasers offensively as she had two goals and a game high four assists, while sophomore Caitlin Brecher (Cheshire, CT) scored twice to go with her three assists and freshmen Ashlee Pechulis (Westfield, Mass.) found the back of the net on two occasions.

Curry junior Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) accounted for six of the Colonels 12 goals on the night and chipped in with one assist, while Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.) finished the night with two goals and three assists. Kaitlin Cloutier (Montpelier, V.T.) registered two goals and Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished with three assists.

Lasell jumped out to a 3-0 lead within the first 2:47 on the game behind freshmen Bridget Doherty’s first career goal and a pair of markers from Wuorio. Curry drew within 3-1 with 26:04 to go in the first on Carey’s first goal of the game. Pechulis and Wuorio’s each tallied for the hosts, to give Lasell a 5-1 lead with 22:22 to play in the opening half.

The Colonels responded with goals from Carey, Bottary, and Felicia Vieira (Bristol, R.I.) to cut the Lasell lead to 5-4 as the teams approached the 10-minute mark of the first. The Lasers would find the back of the net four more times over a six and a half minute span to go on top 9-4 and threaten to put the game away. Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) finished a pass from Brickey with just over 20 seconds remaining in the half to stem the tide and give the visitors a momentum boost heading into intermission.

The second half began with the first goal of the season for Slattery to increase the lead for the Lasers to 10-5.  The Colonels’ Carey would strike twice to slice the lead to 10-7 with 25:24 to play, helping her squad remain within striking distance. A goal by Brecher on a nice feed from Slattery restored the Lasers lead to four at 11-7, but Carey and Cloutier came right back with goals to make the score 11-9 and signal that the game would go down to the wire.

Bridget Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) once again give her team a three-goal cushion, however 34 seconds later Curry would once again cut the lead to two at the 18:04 mark on Cloutier’s second goal. Slattery made it 13-10 in Lasell’s favor with an unassisted goal at the 16:10 mark, and Curry drew within two again, at 13-11, on a free position shot by Ana Bottary with just over 12 minutes remaining.

With just 4:06 left, Carey netted her sixth of the night to cut the lead down to one, but solid a defensive effort and possession by the Lasers were enough to stall the comeback effort by Curry.

Kelton Vuilleumier (Duxbury, Mass.) made a pair of saves for Curry while taking the loss and Sammy Long (Staten Island, N.Y.) stopped two shots in in her college debut to earn the victory in goal for Lasell.
