Women’s Basketball Quieted by Gulls in CCC Contest

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's basketball team fell at home to Endicott College by a score of 74-41 on Wednesday evening. After the loss, the Colonels sit at 4-11 on the year with a 2-4 mark in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). The Gulls move up in the league at 4-2, while improving to 6-8 overall.

The Colonels hit the scoreboard first and shutout their visitors over the opening 3:45 to open up a 5-0 lead. The Gulls, however, made two baskets on two possessions and knotted the score at 5-all. The teams traded baskets, bringing the score to another tie at 10-10 with 3:23 to play in the frame. Endicott closed on a 4-point run, though, which earned them a 14-10 edge heading into the second quarter.

The second framed opened similar to the first, but the roles had reversed. Curry endured a scoreless run of over five minutes over a period that dated back to the first quarter, before a layup by Kirsten Smith (East Bridgewater, Mass.) cut the Gulls' lead to 17-12. The deficit stayed at five as another bucket by Smith brought the score to 21-16, but it would be all Endicott from there, as the visitors scored the half's final nine points to take a 30-16 lead into halftime.

The visitors would tack on to their lead as the teams returned from the locker rooms, as a 16-5 streak brought their advantage to 25 points at 46-21. The Colonels righted the ship and stopped the bleeding, but the Gulls remained several possessions ahead of their hosts as the third stanza concluded with the scoreboard reading 52-29.

Endicott continued to build their lead as play resumed, accounting for each of the first three made field goals of the fourth quarter. Smith aided the Colonel offense by scoring six of her 14 points in the final frame, shooting 66.7% from the floor and converting a pair of free throw attempts, but it would not be enough as the Gulls secured the conference victory by a final score of 74-41.

Smith's 14 points lock up her second consecutive double-digit scoring effort, while also setting a new season-high for the freshman. Smith and Kathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) each dished out a pair of helpers to lead the team, while Dunn secured the team lead in rebounds with nine. Three players turned in 10+ points for Endicott, led by the 17 of Emily Pratt (Gardner, Mass.). Pratt also topped the team with nine boards, while four different Gulls handed out three assists each.

The Gulls will try to make it two-in-a-row as they stay on the road to take on Roger Williams at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18. The Colonels will also get back to action on Saturday at 1 o'clock, as they head to Dudley, Mass. to take on the Bison of Nichols College. Both games are CCC match-ups.
