Second Half Scoring Propels Rams Past Women’s Basketball

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's basketball team lost a non-conference contest to Suffolk University on Tuesday evening by a score of 63-47. With the win, the Rams improve to 4-2 on the year, while the Colonels move to 1-7.

The Rams got the evening's scoring underway as Jordan Hipwell (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) put in a layup, but Gina Coote (Dedham, Mass.) tied it on the following possession with a basket of her own. With six minutes left on the clock, Kirsten Smith's (East Bridgewater, Mass.) first points of the day tied the score again, but a bucket by Jenni-Rose DiCecco (Falmouth, Mass.) on Suffolk's next chance put the visitors ahead for the remainder of the quarter, eventually taking a 14-10 lead into the first break.

Matching scores from DiCecco and Kathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) brought the score to 17-12 with 8:25 to play in the half, but they would be the only points by either team over the next three minutes and twenty seconds. As the scoring resumed, the Colonels cut the deficit to one at 19-18, but the Rams closed the frame on a 10-3 run to make their advantage 29-21 entering the intermission.

Alexis Hackett (Charlton, Mass.) opened the scoring in the second half to build the Suffolk lead to 31-21, but eight straight Colonel points brought the edge down to just two. However, the visitors regrouped and took 10 of the next 12 to bring their advantage back to 10 at 41-31. After Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.) converted a pair of free throws, DiCecco scored the frame's final five points to send the Rams to the fourth quarter with a 13-point advantage.

Suffolk opened with five points in the fourth quarter, before a 13-5 Curry run brought the deficit back down to 10, this time at 56-46. Despite their momentum, with just 3:00 left in regulation, the Colonels did not have enough time to dig into the lead further, as the Rams managed to lock up a 63-47 victory.

Kai. Smith topped the stat sheet for the Colonels with 15 points and three helpers, while DiCecco put up the only 20-point performance of the evening to lead the Rams. Hackett led Suffolk in the win with 14 rebounds and four assists, while Dunn grabbed six boards.

Both teams will return to action with road match-ups on Wednesday, December 4, as the Rams will head to Fitchburg State for a 6:00 p.m. tilt, while the Colonels kick off their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) schedule with a 5:50 p.m. tip-off at Roger Williams.
