Perine's Big Night Lifts Colonels Past Bison

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's basketball team put away the Nichols College Bison early, earning a 52-31 victory at home Tuesday night in the Katz Gymnasium. The Colonels earned their second Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) win of the season while pulling their overall record back to .500, at 4-4. Nichols falls to 3-5 on the season and 1-2 in CCC play.

The Colonels got off to a hot start, leading 11-0 by the halfway mark of the first quarter. After a missed shot by each team to get the action under way, senior Molly Plunkett (Quincy, Mass.) put in a jumper to get the scoring started. After an early foul by Nichols Melody Millett (Naples, Maine), the Colonels received nine consecutive points from freshman Peyton Perine (Fairfax, Va.). The repeat CCC Rookie-of-the-Week winner would make a case for a third consecutive award, finishing the night with 20 points, already the third time she's hit the 20-point mark this season. Appreciative of Perine's hot hand was senior captain Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.). Irwin earned her second double-double of the season and 17th with the Colonels, posting 11 points and 10 assists, six of which went to Perine.

The Bison would get to within seven before the conclusion of the first quarter, but that's the closest they would get to the Colonels in this one, as Curry's defense held Nichols to 25.5% from the floor and an even stingier 16.7% from three-point land.

Nichols failed to get a double-digit scorer, but saw positive notes from both Rebecca Cleary (Milford, N.H.) and Ciarri Formby-Lavertu (Mount Vernon, N.H.), who posted six rebounds apiece, while freshman Amanda Leal (Tyngsboro, Mass.) would pour in 11 boards for the hosts.

The Bison were led in scoring by Jessica Larsh (Bolton, Conn.) and Isabella Nerney (Guilford, Conn.), chipping in seven points each, while Perine's 20 led the way for the Colonels. Nichols also picked up 8 points from the bench, while 50 of Curry's 51 total points were netted by the starting five.

Curry will next play in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. against Widener University (Pa.) on Thursday, December 20 at 10:00 a.m. as part of the Cruzin Classic presented by Trip Sports. Nichols returns to action at Connecticut College on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
