Women's Basketball Holds Off Late Charge To Defeat Wentworth in CCC Opener, 47-42

MILTON, Mass.Molly Plunkett (Quincy, Mass.) poured in a game-high 20 points and added 14 rebounds to help the Curry College women's basketball take down the Wentworth Institute of Technoglogy by a final of 47-42 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener for both teams. The win pushes the Colonels to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the CCC while the Leopards drop to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Curry jumped out to a big lead in the opening quarter, holding an 18-6 lead after one period as five different players hit field goals. Wentworth, who outscored the Colonels in the second quarter, kept the score close going into the half as Curry carried a 28-19 lead into the intermission. Curry responded to outscore the Leopards in the third and then Wentworth outscored the Colonels 14-8 in the final stanza to fall just short.  

Curry put two players in double digits in scoring. Plunkett recorded a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. 10 of her 114 boards came on the defensive glass. Gina Coote (Dedham, Mass.) was the second Colonel in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds. Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) was the third leading scorer on the night with seven points. The junior captain also added four rebounds, five assists, and two steals in 18 minutes. Taylor McNair (Oxford, Conn.) and Caroline Kilduff (Rockland, Mass.) tallied all the bench points for Curry with two apiece. The Colonels went on to shoot 30.9 percent for the contest.

Erin Morton (Norway, Maine) was the leading scorer off the bench for the Leopards with eight points. Courtney McCormick (Hanson, Mass.) and Emily Magasic (West Milford, N.J.) tallied seven each while Michelle McCloskey (Madison, Conn.) put up five points, four rebounds, and one steal. 10 different players scored for Wentworth as they would drop their conference opener. The Leopards shot 27.8 for the game.

Curry will next play on Saturday when they travel to Endicott for a 1:00 p.m. Wentworth will return to action on Saturday when they host Eastern Nazarene at 1:00 p.m.
