MILTON, Mass.- The Curry College women's basketball team collected a 63-37 victory over the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday night in conference play. With the win, the Colonels moves to 5-9 overall and 3-4 in the CCC. The loss drops Wentworth to 2-12 overall and 0-7 in league play.
Curry held the Leopards scoreless over the first 6:36, outscoring the visitors by 15. Wentworth got on the board at the 3:09 mark in the first quarter when Emily Magasic (West Milford, N.J.). Following a jump shot by Amanda Gresian (Douglas, Mass.) to move the lead back to 14 Siobhan Turner (Wilmington, Mass.) tallied the final points for Wentworth in the first stanza to make the score 17-4 in favor of the Colonels.
The Curry lead ballooned to 20 in the second quarter when Molly Plunkett (Quincy, Mass.) hit a layup to stretch the lead to 28-8. Following that basket the Leopards went on a mini 6-0 run to make the deficit 14 when Baylor Johnson converted on a free throw opportunity. 14 would be the closest they would get the rest of the half. The Colonels carried a 17 point lead into the locker room, 33-16.
Four straight points by Wentworth to open the second half trimmed the Curry lead to 13 with 8:47 to go in the third quarter. But with every Leopard run, the Colonels had the answer. They would push their lead back out to 19 when Plunkett knocked down two free throws. Curry extended its lead to 20 later in the period after a jump shot by Irwin made the lead 21 at 45-24.
The Colonels would outscore Wentworth in the final quarter, 16-12 to capture their third Commonwealth Coast Conference victory with a 63-37 final score. Plunkett led all players with a game-high 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc and 2-for-2 shooting at the line. The sophomore added 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) joined Plunkett in double figures as she registered 13 points and 12 rebounds. Paige Senatore fell one point shy of a double-double (nine points, 10 rebounds).
Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) and Kellie Messer (Hollis, N.H.) led the way for Wentworth, scoring six points apiece. Courtney McCormick (Hanson, Mass.) and Magasic chipped in five points each.
The Colonels held the edge in nearly every statistical category in the victory. They had a deciding advantage in shooting percentage, finishing the game 37.9% from the field. Wentworth shot 31.3% on the game. The home team also had a massive edge on the glass, outrebounding Wentworth, 53-28.
Curry returns to the hardwood on Saturday as they are set to host the University of New England at 1 p.m. Wentworth will also be in action Saturday at 1 p.m. as they will host Salve Regina in a 1 p.m. tip-off.
