MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College Women's Basketball team suffered a 68-52 conference loss to Gordon College on Tuesday night. The Colonels fell to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in CCC play on the season while the Fighting Scots improved to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Gordon jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first quarter, capped off by a three-pointer by Olivia Stark (Arvada, Colo.). Curry got on the board at the 4:47 mark in the first after Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) converted a layup to make the score, 11-2. Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) scored the final points of the stanza for Curry as the first quarter ended with Gordon in the lead, 20-6.
Irwin led all scorers with a game-high 20 points. She also recorded seven rebounds, three assists and four steals in 31 minutes of action. Meghan Foley (Malden, Mass.) paced the Fighting Scots with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Gordon continued their momentum into the second quarter, increasing their lead to 20 following a layup by Stark. Curry was able to trim the deficit to 11 following two made free throws by Paige Senatore (Ayer, Mass.) but a jump shot by Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) and two free throws by Jess Ryan (Milford, N.H.) pushed the lead to 34-19.
Curry came out of the locker room at the half and began to chip away at the lead. A 9-0 run which began at the 2:20 mark in the second quarter trimmed the Fighting Scots lead down to 10 and was capped off by two free throws by Lovashia Rosario (Worcester, Mass.). A layup at the 1:13 mark by Irwin made the lead seven but then Foley pushed the lead back to nine to end the quarter with a layup.
Gordon answered the call in the fourth and outscored the Colonels, 20-13 as they captured their third straight conference game.
Following Irwin with her game-high 20 points was Rosario with nine points off the bench. Sam Bamford (Easton, Mass.) and Senatore tallied seven points apiece while Molly Plunkett (Quincy, Mass.) and Rice closed out the scoring with five and four points, respectively.
Stark joined Foley as the other lone Fighting Scott in double figures with 10. Ryan and Alisha Henderson (Oregon City, Ore.) had nine points apiece while Sarah Gibbs (Elizabethtown, Pa.) and Jenna Olson (Rutland, Vt.) finished with eight and seven points, respectively.
Gordon held the edge in field goal percentage, three-point percentage, rebounding, assists, second chance points, points in the paint and bench points. Curry won the turnover battle, converting 25 to Gordon's 31 and scored 33 points off of those turnovers.
Curry will next play Saturday when they travel to Suffolk for their non-conference finale at 1 p.m. Gordon's next game will be a road contest at Emerson on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
