Curry Women's Basketball Records First Win of Season, Defeats Pine Manor College 72-52

MILTON, Mass.­- In the opening round of the 2016 Curry College Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament, MIT defeated Trinity College by the score of 69-47, while the host Colonels beat Pine Manor College, 72-52.

MIT 69, Trinity 47

MIT outscored the Bantams in three of the four quarters en route to a 69-47 victory over Trinity. The Engineers were led by Kara Holinski (Livonia, Mich.) as she recorded a game-high 18 points.

MIT held a 17-11 lead after the first quarter of play behind a 6-for-15 shooting performance from the field in the opening stanza. The Engineers would then outscore the Bantams 17-6 in the second quarter to break the game open. Heading into the locker room at the half, MIT doubled up the Bantams, 34-17.

Trinity shot 34 percent from the field for the game while MIT recorded a shooting percentage of 48. The Bantams held a 36-27 edge in rebounding for the contest while the Engineers committed eight less turnovers than their counterparts (24-16).  

The Bantams' leading scorer was Rebecca Reifler (Garden City, N.Y.), recording 11 points shooting 5-for-8 from the field.

MIT closed strong in the second half, outscoring Trinity 35-30 and registering their largest lead of 29 with 4:05 to go in regulation. The Engineers finished with three players in double figures: Holinkski, Dolly Yuan (San Jose, Calif.), and Taylor V'Dovec (Blaine, Wash.).

Curry 72, Pine Manor 52

Curry rebounded from a one-point halftime deficit and outscored Pine Manor 37-16 in the second half to defeat the Gators by a final of 72-52. Sophomore Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass) paced four Colonels in double figures with a game-high 17 points. She also recorded 13 rebounds for a double-double. The Curry defense held the Pine Manor offense to just 16 percent shooting in the second half while the home team recorded a mark of 43.8 percent shooting from the field. 

Pine Manor was paced by Erica Jones (Atlanta, Ga.) in the points category with 16. The junior was one of two Gators in double figures (Shaneka Monroe, 12).

The Colonels held the edge in many statistical categories including field goal percentage, rebounding, assists, points off turnovers, second chance points and bench points.

Curry advances to the championship game of the Curry Tip Off Tournament and will play MIT at 3 p.m. Trinity and Pine Manor will play in a consolation game at 1 p.m.
