Women's Basketball Falls to the University of New England 81-40 in CCC Play

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's basketball team remained undefeated in conference play in an 81-40 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Curry College Thursday evening at the Harold Alfond Forum. The Nor'easters improved to 4-0 in the conference and 7-3 overall while Curry fell to 4-7 on the season and 2-3 in CCC action.

The Nor'easters started the game on a 7-0 run within the first minute of the game and led 26-12 after one quarter of play. The second frame was much of the same with UNE leading 41-23 at the end of the first half. Freshman Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) led the way scoring seven points in the half while adding four steals and three assists. Senior Christina Deiorio (Stoughton, Mass.) was right behind scoring five and adding a pair of both steals and rebounds.

The Nor'easters increased their lead by 20 points in the third quarter, bringing the score to 64-26 after three full. Junior Alyssa Keeney (Coventry, Conn.) scored five of her ten total points in the fourth quarter alone as the Colonels scored their largest amount of points in a quarter (14). Senior Elizabeth Aekus (Whitingham, Vt.) closed out the scoring for the game and brought the final score of 81-40.

Keeney finished with 10 points to lead all Curry scorers and was followed closely by Irwin with seven. Irwin also dished out five assists and recorded five steals as well. Senior Shannon Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) tied for a team-high eight rebounds.

Junior Brooke Flaherty (Portland, Maine) came off the bench and led UNE with 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds, both game-highs. Brown contributed 13 points and three steals, while sophomore Olivia Shaw (Saco, Maine) and senior Lauren Hayden (Chantilly, Va.) each scored  11 points with Shaw recording eight steals and Hayden recording seven.

Both teams play 1 p.m. CCC road contests Saturday as the Nor'easters head to Salve Regina University while the Colonels face Gordon College.
