Women's Basketball Takes Care of CCC Rival Nichols, 64-53

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College junior Samantha Corcoran (Hampton, N.H.) blocked a school-record nine shots in a 64-53 victory over visiting Nichols College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action Tuesday night in Milton. The Colonels improved to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in CCC play, while the Bison fell to 6-4 overall and 1-3 in league action.

Corcoran recorded four of her nine blocked shots in the first half to go along with eight rebounds, leading Curry to a 24-17 edge at intermission. The Colonels biggest lead of the first half (22-13) followed a made layup by sophomore Kerry White (Windham, N.H.) with 2:13 on the clock.

In the second period, Curry claimed a 15-point advantage (40-25) after junior Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) sank a three-pointer with 12:48 on the clock. Nichols answered with a 10-2 run, trimming the deficit to seven (42-35) with 7:56 remaining in regulation. The run was started after senior Devon Spirka (Wilmington, Vt.) split a pair from the charity stripe and was capped off with a layup by junior Alexis Wegrzynek (Wilbraham, Mass.). The Colonels maintained a steady lead over the remaining 7:56, en route to the 64-53 final.

In addition to her school-record nine blocks, Corcoran recorded a double-double with game-highs in points (15) and rebounds (11). Beltz and senior Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points apiece.

Junior Amber Litwinko (Berlin, Conn.) led the Bison with a team-best 13 points. Spirka and junior Carly Turpel (Berkley, Mass.) added 10 points each. Wegrzynek and freshman Julia Zawacki (Waterford, Conn.) pulled down nine boards apiece.

Both teams return to CCC action Thursday night, as Curry travels to Gordon for a 7:30 p.m. contest, while Nichols hosts Western New England at 5:30 p.m.
