Women's Basketball Outlasts Visiting Suffolk, 62-59

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College held off a late rally by visiting Suffolk University, outlasting the Rams, 62-59, in non-conference women's basketball action Monday night in Milton. The Colonels improved to 3-2 on the season, while the visitors fell to 4-2 overall.

Curry took its biggest lead of the first half (22-15) after junior Jeanette Fallon (Nashua, N.H.) sank a layup with 8:03 on the clock. Suffolk chipped away at the deficit and tied the game at 28-28 after freshman Georgia Bourikas (Hull, Mass.) split a pair from the charity stripe heading into intermission.

The Colonels opened the second frame on a 14-3 run over the first 5:17 to take their largest lead of the game (42-31). During the run, junior Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) and senior Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, Mass) connected on two three-pointers apiece.

With 22 seconds remaining in regulation, freshman Kelsey Schiebel (Windham, N.H.) cut the Curry lead to four (61-57) with a long distance three-pointer.  On the following possession, the Rams stole the ball and junior Iliana Quadri (Sudbury, Mass.) converted a layup with 15 seconds left to trim the deficit to two. Beltz was fouled on the following play and split a pair from the free throw line, securing the 62-59 victory for the Colonels.

Assarian led all scorers with 19 points, including four three-pointers. Beltz chipped in with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Fallon added 11 points and seven boards.

Suffolk was led by Quadri with a team-best 16 points. Senior Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards. Sophomore Katie Murray (Holden, Mass.) also pulled down 13 boards, while also adding nine points.

Curry returns to action at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, travelling to Western New England for a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest, while the Rams host Fitchburg State on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference matchup.
