MILTON, Mass. - In the opening round of the Curry College Tip-Off Tournament, the host Colonels topped Southern Vermont College 60-32, while Fitchburg State beat Johnson State, 89-57.
CURRY 60, SOUTHERN VERMONT 32
Curry used an 11-0 run over the first six minutes of the game to build a lead it would never relinquish. The run began with a layup by junior Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, Mass.) and was capped off with a layup by sophomore Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.). The Colonels took their biggest lead of the game (53-16) after Beltz sank another layup with 9:13 remaining in regulation.
The Colonels were led by Beltz with 14 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Assarian chipped in with 11 points. Freshman Shannon Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Samantha Corcoran (Hapton, N.H.) pulled down 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
Freshman Amber Flagg (Windsor, Conn.) led the Mountaineers with 14 points. Kala McKenzie (Fair Haven, Vt.) and Sarah McDonald (Cohoes, N.Y.) had seven rebounds apiece.
FITCHBURG STATE 89, JOHNSON STATE 57
Fitchburg State entered intermission with a 54-28 edge. In the second half, the Falcons built their largest lead (38 points) several times during the half.
The Falcons were led by sophomore Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass.) with 21 points and five steals. Freshman Taylah Pelote (E. Taunton, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Pelote also recorded three blocks. Senior Kelsey Johnston recorded a total of 12 total points. Senior Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass.) and freshman Megan Wodzinski (Littleton, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points apiece.
The Badgers were led by sophomore Brittany Robertson (Burlington, Vt.) with a team-high 18 points. Freshman Lazrin Schenck (Shelburne, Vt.) followed Robertson with 13 points. Freshman Brittany Moody (South Burlington, Vt.) chipped in with 11 points, while classmate Mary Richardson (Vernon, Vt.) contributed a team-high seven rebounds.
