Women's Basketball Knocks Off CCC Rival Gordon, 51-37
MILTON, Mass. – Curry College withstood a furious second-half comeback by Gordon College, then cruised past the visiting Fighting Scots, 51-37, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon in Milton. Curry improves to 9-9 overall and 5-6 in league play, while Gordon falls to 2-16 overall and 0-11 in CCC action.
 
Curry took its biggest lead of the first half (24-9) after senior Carolyn Houston (Melrose, N.Y.) made a layup with 4:46 on the clock. Gordon scored seven of the next nine points to trim the deficit to 10 (26-16) heading into intermission.
 
The Fighting Scots scored the first 13 points of the second frame to take a three-point lead (29-26) with 10:49 remaining in regulation. Junior Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.) started the run with a shot from beyond the arc and junior Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.) capped it off with a made jump shot.
 
With 7:05 remaining in regulation, the Colonels reclaimed the lead (36-35) after Houston converted another layup. The Colonels maintained their lead throughout the remainder of the game, outscoring Gordon 15-2 over the final seven minutes of play.
 
Junior Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, Mass.) led Curry with 12 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Jeanette Fallon (Nashua, N.H.) added 10 points and six boards.
 
The Fighting Scots were led by Bareford with a game-high 14 points. Kranyak chipped in with 11, while pulling down a game-best 22 rebounds.
 
Both teams return to CCC action on the road Tuesday, as the Colonels visit the University of New England at 5:30 p.m., while Gordon travels to Roger Williams for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
