Losing Skid Reaches Four as Women's Basketball Falls to Visiting UNE, 57-39

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College saw its losing skid stretch to four after absorbing a 57-39 loss to visiting University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women’s basketball action Thursday night in Milton. The Nor’easters improve to 8-4 overall and 5-0 in CCC play, while the Colonels fall to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in league action.
Curry sophomore Samantha Corcoran (Hampton, N.H.) scored the first basket of the game, but UNE answered with a 22-0 run. The run began with 18:36 on the clock after sophomore Kelly Coleman converted a layup. It was later capped off by freshman Michaela Flanagan (Plymouth, Mass.) from beyond the arc with 7:19 remaining in the first half. Nor’easters’ senior Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) added two from the charity stripe to close out the half and give UNE a 29-11 edge at intermission.
The Nor’easters took their biggest lead of the game (47-21) after Suggs sank a layup with 10:03 remaining in regulation. The Colonels chipped away, cutting the deficit to 16 (55-39) after sophomore Christina Deiorio (Stoughton, Mass.) hit a three-pointer with 45 seconds left, but were unable to pull any closer.
Flanagan led all scorers with 15 points, while Suggs added 13 points and pulled down a game-high 19 rebounds to record the double-double. Coleman chipped in with 11 points.
Deiorio had a team-high 11 points, while sophomore Jeanette Fallon (Nashua, N.H.) contributed 10. Corcoran and sophomore Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) pulled down six boards apiece.
Both teams host 1:00 p.m. CCC contests on Saturday, as Curry faces off against Endicott, while UNE matches up against Nichols.
