Women's Basketball Nipped by CCC Rival Salve Regina, 56-54
MILTON, Mass. - Curry College fell to visiting Salve Regina University, 56-54, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon in Milton.  The Seahawks improve to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in league play, while the Colonels drop to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the CCC.

Curry took an early 3-0 lead thanks to senior Carolyn Houston’s (Melrose, N.Y.) made three-pointer at 18:56 of the opening frame.  The Colonels maintained a lead until junior Marissa Pendergast (Medfield, Mass) converted a layup to tie the score at 15-15 with 9:38 to go in the half.  Salve Regina grabbed its largest lead of the half (30-21) with just over a minute to go before intermission.

In the second half, Curry fought back to tie the score at 46-46 with just over nine minutes to play in regulation.  With just under two minutes to play, the Colonels built a four-point cushion (54-50).  But Seahawks’ freshman Meghan Harden (Sandwich, Mass) scored the final four points of the game, including a clutch three-pointer with 29 seconds remaining that put the visitors ahead for good.

Salve Regina was led by Harden with 18 total points.  Sophomore Brianna Del Valle (Belchertown, Mass.) notched the game’s only double-double with 13 points and a team-best 11 rebounds.  Senior Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I) followed Del Valle with nine rebounds and three steals.  Pendergast also contributed nine rebounds.

Curry was led by sophomore Jeanette Fallon (Nashua, N.H.) with 12 total points.  Freshman Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) added 11 total points.  Houston also contributed with 10 points.  Sophomore Samantha Corcoran (Hampton, N.H.) was game-high rebounder with 17 total boards.  Corcoran also tied a school record for most blocked shots in a game with eight.

Both teams resume CCC play next Tuesday on the road, as the Seahawks travel to Eastern Nazarene (5:00 p.m.), while the Colonels visit Roger Williams (6:00 p.m.).
