Softball Names Captains For 2020 Season

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College softball team has announced its captains for the 2020 season. Senior catcher Michaela Colleran (East Bridgewater, Mass.), senior 1B/3B/DP Caroline Johnson (Milton, Mass.), and junior 2B/P Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.) were chosen by their teammates and coaches to lead the 2020 Colonels during the upcoming season. This will be the second season as a team captain for Colleran and the first season each for Johnson and Newcomb.

Colleran had a solid junior year for the Colonels. She played in all 35 games, batted .336 with 39 hits, drove in 27 runs, and compiled a .956 fielding percentage. In her three years with Curry Softball, Colleran has played in 95 games, has 90 hits, and has an overall batting average of .311. Colleran also has a solid academic record with a cumulative GPA of 3.49 as a Community Health & Wellness major, earning 101 credits in her first three years at the College.  She was also recently named to the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Academic All-Conference Team. Colleran was also chosen as the team's Most Valuable Player for this past season and was the Paula Martin Memorial Award winner, recognizing her "Hard Work and Dedication on the Softball Field" in the 2018 season.

Johnson also had a good junior year for the Colonels. She played in 27 games, batted .250, had 18 hits, and drove in 15 runs. In her three seasons of Curry Softball, Johnson has played in 57 games and has 24 hits. Johnson also has a solid academic record with a cumulative GPA of 2.99 as a Community Education major and has earned 91.5 credits in her first three years at the College.  She also was recently chosen as the team's Most Improved Player for the 2019 season. Johnson also serves as the President of Curry's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and gives campus tours for the Admissions Office.

Newcomb had a very solid sophomore campaign for the Colonels. She played in all 35 games, batted .290, had 29 hits, and compiled the lowest ERA on the squad. In her two seasons of Curry Softball, Newcomb has played in 67 games, has 46 hits, and has an overall batting average of .269. Newcomb also has a solid academic record with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 as a Public Health & Wellness major and has earned 64 credits in her first two years at the College. Newcomb was also chosen as the team's Unsung Hero Award winner for the 2019 season.
