Softball Toppled in CCC Finale

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Curry College softball team got down early and failed to regain their footing in their final Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) double-header of the year at the hands of Endicott College. With the sweep, Endicott improves to 24-4 on the year with a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play. The Colonels now sit at 12-23 overall with two games left on the schedule and a 2-14 record in the CCC.

Game One: Endicott 10, Curry 1 (F/5)

The Gulls jumped out to an early lead, as a pair of singles, a walk, and a steal loaded the bases with just one out. They would not stay occupied for long, however, as a double off the bat of Lauren Misiaszek (Londonderry, N.H.) cleared the bags and gave Endicott a 3-0 lead. Misiaszek would score a batter later to make it a four-run edge, but the Gulls were not done yet. After Curry collected just a single hit in the second and third innings, the hosts broke through for three more runs in the bottom of the third, capped by an RBI double to right-center by Olivia Odermatt (Cheshire, Conn.). Following another 1-2-3 inning at the plate for the Colonels, Adrianna Favreau (Tewksbury, Mass.) led off the top of the fourth with a solo shot to left, before Misiaszek and Zoe Rose (Carlstadt, N.J.) crossed the plate to pad the lead later in the frame at 10-0. Needing three runs to avoid the run-ahead rule and just three outs to get them, Curry sparked a brief rally in the top of the fifth. Kiana Lloyd (Worcester, Mass.), Kaitlyn Gozzo (Braintree, Mass.), and Liana Duarte (Taunton, Mass.) all singled in the inning, pushing pinch runner Julia Price (Islip, N.Y.) across the plate with the first Colonel run of the day. However, the visitors would strand a pair of baserunners as a strikeout closed out the front half of the double-header with the Gulls taking it 10-1 in five innings.

Laura Somerville (Suffield, Conn., 7-1) earns the win with her four innings of one-hit, shutout ball. Gina DeMilt (Princeton, N.J.) aided her wing by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Duarte picked up the only Colonel RBI of the contest, while Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) falls to 7-10 after the sophomore gave up 10 runs on 12 hits over four innings of work.

Game Two: Endicott 13, Curry 4 (F/5)

Following their hot start in game one, Endicott got right back to it as the second contest got underway, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on another Favreau dinger. Curry starter Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.) helped her own cause by getting one back in the top of the second, singling home Alexandra Chase (Biddeford, Maine), but the Gulls would not back down, snagging four more runs on three hits in their half of the frame. Trailing 6-1 entering the third, Curry was able to chase Endicott's starter after a two RBI double by Caroline Johnson (Milton, Mass.). A sacrifice fly by Alexis Buckner (Foxborough, Mass.) drove in another run, but also closed out the inning with the hosts still ahead 6-4. The Gulls got a pair of the runs back in the third, highlighted by a DeMilt double, but the wheels came off for the Colonel pitching as the fifth inning rolled around. Favreau started the inning by reaching on an error before scoring on a Hayley Arduini (Southington, Conn.) double. The RBI was followed by three straight walks to give the Gulls another run, then a fourth walk of the inning and a pair of singles helped Endicott play a little small ball, making the score 13-4 heading into the top of the fifth. The Colonels once again got the inning started with a baserunner as Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.) drew a walk, but two straight grounders to third recorded the first two outs on a double play and the third on a 5-3 to make quick work of the visitors.

Johnson led the Curry offense with two RBI in the losing effort. DeMilt and Favreau each recorded two hits with the latter driving in three runs, while Jamie Hopgood (Warwick, R.I.) brought home five. Michaela Hamill (Lynn, Mass., 8-2) earns the win despite giving up four runs over a pair of innings, while Newcomb (3-8) suffers the loss after her three and a third innings saw the Gulls manage eight hits, eight walks, and 13 runs.

Curry will close out their season with a non-conference home make-up with the Rams of Suffolk University on Tuesday, April 23. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. for the double-header originally slated for March 28. Endicott will get back to action on Monday, April 22, as they wrap up their CCC schedule with a double-header at Nichols College. The conference twin billing will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Dudley, Mass.
