Softball Swept By Roger Williams in Conference Play

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College dropped a softball doubleheader to Roger Williams University by final scores of 5-1 and 9-3 on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at D. Forbes Will Field.

Game 1 – Roger Williams 5, Curry 1

The Colonels were the first to score in the opener in the bottom of the second. Junior Caroline Johnson (Milton, Mass.) led off the frame with a single to left field. Freshman Alexis Buckner (Foxborough, Mass.) followed with a single to left center. Later in the frame, sophomore Allison May (West Bridgewater, Mass.) drove in Johnson with a single to shortstop.

The next runs didn't come until the sixth as Roger Williams pulled away. The Hawks knotted the contest at one when senior Hailey Prechtel (Glenmont, N.Y.) drove in freshman Audrey Gavin (Old Lyme, Conn.) on a sacrifice fly to left field. Senior Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) then stepped to the plate and connected on a two-run homer to extend the lead to 3-1. Junior Rachel Wandzilak (West Islip, N.Y.) also scored on the round-tripper.

Roger Williams added two more in the top of the seventh on one play. Freshman Alex Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) delivered a two-RBI double down the left field line, which scored juniors Tara Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) and Taylor Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) as the contest would end in the 5-1 final.

Junior Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) picked up the win in the circle for the Hawks. She went a full seven innings and only allowed one run on four hits. Murray also fanned two to earn her third win of the season. Sophomore Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.) registered the loss, going six innings. Newcomb surrendered five runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking three in the loss.

Freshman Liana Duarte (Taunton, Mass.), Johnson, Buckner, and May each registered one hit for the Colonels to lead in that category.

Game 2 – Roger Williams 9, Curry 3

The game was scoreless until Roger Williams put up two runs in the top of the third. Sophomore Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) plated the first run on a single to the pitcher by Fleming. Lombardo also scored on the play to make it 2-0.

Curry fired back with a pair runs in the home half of the third. Johnson drove in the first tallies for the Colonels a sacrifice fly to center field to score Duarte and junior Molly Horn (Buzzards Bay, Mass.). Duarte scored on an error by the catcher as Curry knotted the game at two.

The Hawks started to pull away in the fourth inning. Taylor Chatowsky singled to left center to plate senior Bella Malvinni (Westerly, R.I.) and sophomore Katrina Goria (Wyckoff, N.J.).

Roger Williams tacked on two more in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-2. Sophomore Bay Naples (Livingston, N.J.) and Fleming executed a double-steal to score Fleming and then Lombardo drove in Naples on a single to right center.

The Hawks were not done scoring as they added three more in the sixth. Prechtel singled to right center to score Lombardo and Taylor Chatkowsky. Malvinni added their last run on an RBI groundout, which scored Prechtel.

The Colonels scored the game's last run in the bottom of the sixth. Horn delivered a single down the right field line to plate freshman Sienna Kulpa (Taunton, Mass.) to make the score 9-3, the eventual final.  

Prechtel allowed one run on four hits and struck out three in the victory over 3.1 innings.

Sophomore Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) (5-9 overall) went the distance for Curry and gave up nine runs (four earned) on 14 hits.

Curry wraps up a six-game homestand on Sunday, April 14 against Western New England University in a CCC doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. Roger Williams returns home to host Endicott College on Sunday beginning at 1:00.
