Softball Drops Pair of League Games at Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – The Curry College softball team dropped a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contests at Gordon College on Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Scots took game one by an 8-4 final and then held off the Colonels 7-5 in game two.

With the sweep, Gordon evens up at 13-13 overall and 4-6 in the CCC. Curry falls to 10-15 overall and 0-8 in league play.

Game 1 - Gordon 8, Curry 4

Gordon jumped ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Karissa Hatchell (Eaton, Colo.) got aboard with a single through the right side for the game's first base runner. Hatchell moved over to third on a single to right center. Junior Caitlin Catalanotto (Kinston, N.H.) drove in two with a double down the left field line for the contest's first runs. The Fighting Scots added another in the frame after sophomore Lily Rivera (Concord, N.H.) reached on an error by Curry sophomore pitcher Allison May (West Bridgewater, Mass.), which allowed Catalanotto to score to push the score to 3-0.

The Colonels answered with a run in the visiting half of the fourth. Following a one out single by freshman Liana Duarte (Taunton, Mass.), junior Michaela Colleran (East Bridgewater, Mass.) plated Duarte with a double down the left field line to put Curry on the board.

Gordon extended the lead to 6-1 with a three-run fourth. Freshman Emma Dubios (Barrington, N.H.) led off the frame with a homer to right center. Later in the frame sophomore Kristen Brown (Granite Springs, N.Y.) singled up the middle to push senior Megan Jenkerson (McDonough, Ga.) across home. Catalanotto rounded out the scoring in the inning with a double to left center to score Brown.

The Fighting Scots added to its advantage in fifth on a two-RBI single by Hatchell, which plated senior Rose Shannon (Ashland, Mass.) and freshman Gabby Hunt (Millbury, Mass.) to make the score 8-1.

The Colonels made a final push in the top of the sixth, plating three. Back-to-back singles kicked off the inning and then sophomore Kiana Lloyd (Worcester, Mass.) brought home Duarte on a base hit up the middle. Sophomore Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.) then reached on an error by Catalanotto, which allowed Colleran to score. Sophomore Jordan Perzan (Burlington, Mass.) manufactured the final Curry run on a sacrifice fly to right field to plate junior Molly Horn (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) for the 8-4 final.

May took the loss in the starting role, surrendering four runs (three earned) on four hits through 3.0 innings of work. She struck out one and walked three in the setback.

Catalanotto earned the victory in the circle, tossing a complete game. She gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits. The juniod fanned nine and walked none to earn her eighth win of the season.

Duarte and Colleran each finished with two hits in the contest.

 Game Two – Gordon 7, Curry 5

The Colonels found themselves down three after the bottom of the first inning. After Jenkerson led off the frame with a double through the left side, Hatchell stepped to the plate and hit a home run to put Gordon up 2-0. The Fighting Scots added one later in the frame on a single up the middle by Shannon, which plated Brown.

Gordon pushed another run across in the second inning, pushing their lead to 4-0 and then added three in the fourth to pull out in front 7-0.

Curry cut into the deficit with a five-run fifth. Horn drew a bases loaded walk to push Caroline Johnson (Milton, Mass.) home. Sophomore Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.) was then hit by a pitch with the bases chucked, which scored Alexandra Chase (Biddeford, Maine). Colleran followed with a two-RBI double to left field to plate Horn and Perzan. Lloyd pushed across the last tally of the inning on a sacrifice fly to left to score freshman Julia Price (Islip, N.Y.) to make the score 7-5, the eventual final.

Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) took the loss for the Colonels after throwing four innings, scattering 12 hits and seven runs while striking out two and walking one.

Perzan led Curry with two hits. Brown went 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored to pace Gordon in the nightcap.

Curry will return to action on Monday, April 8 at Mass. Maritime in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m. Gordon will next play at home against Lasell College in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 9 beginning at 3:00.
