Softball Sweeps Mass Maritime To Conclude Regular Season

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College softball team closed the regular season with a sweep of non-conference opponent Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Monday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field. The Colonels captured game one 9-8 in eight innings and then took game two 10-2 in five innings.

The wins move Curry to 14-20 on the season while the Buccaneers slip to 3-21.

Game One – Curry 9, Mass Maritime 8 (8 innings)

Jill Corazzini (Paxton, Mass.) opened the scoring Mass Maritime in the first inning with an RBI single to left field, which scored Melissa Cochrane (Walpole, Mass.). The Colonels got the tally back in the bottom of the frame after Michaela Colleran (East Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to center field. An error by the center fielder allowed Madeline Critch (Halifax, Mass.) to cross home to knot the game at one.

The Buccaneers picked up a run apiece in the second and fourth to grab a 3-1 advantage. Cochrane doubled to left and an error by the Curry left fielder got Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) to score. In the fourth, Carli Thomas (Brewster, Mass.) got ahold of a single to left to plate Sarah Monteiro (North Falmouth, Mass.).

Curry tied the contest for the second time in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs. Critch and Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.) picked up RBI base knocks to deadlock the game at three.

This back-and-forth game swung back in favor of Mass Maritime in the fifth. Monteiro brought home a run on a single to left. Kristin Arthur (Whitman, Mass.) touched home to give the visitors the 4-3 lead.

The Colonels answered right back, putting up two in the bottom of the inning. Kiana Lloyd (Worcester, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice to short from Jessica Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) allowed Jordan Perzan (Burlington, Conn.) to tie the contest for the third time, this time at 4-4. Curry broke the tie when Kiana Lloyd (Worcester, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch and then went up by two when a sacrifice fly to left from Perzan scored Allison May to make the score 6-4.

Mass Maritime knotted the game in the top of the seventh. Cochrane's single to left which plated Madison Coughlin (Monroe, Conn.) made the score 6-5. The game would eventually tie again as the contest would head to extras, deadlocked at six.

After the Buccaneers put up one in the top of the eighth, Curry broke the tie with an RBI double from May to score Talia Forte (North Scituate, R.I.). Later in the frame, Colleran delivered the walk-off two-run homer to give the Colonels the thrilling victory.

Critch, Lambert, May, and Colleran all finished with two hits each for the Colonels.

Cochrane, Thomas and Madison Ovadek (Greenland, N.H.) paced Mass Maritime with two hits apiece.

May recorded the win in the circle for the home squad. The freshman tossed three and one-third innings while allowing five runs on seven hits. She struck out one and walked one to pick up her first win of the season.

Cochrane was tagged with the loss, surrendering nine runs on 13 hits. The sophomore walked three and struck out none in the setback.

Game Two – Curry 10, Mass Maritime 2 (5 innings)

Curry was the first to strike in game two, putting up one in the first. Colleran flew out to right, which was deep enough to score Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.). Mass Maritime picked up the tying run in the bottom of the frame a sacrifice fly of their own from Ovadek to plate Cochrane.

The Colonels broke the tie in the third on a two-run shot from Colleran to left. Later in the inning, Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.) reached on an error from the right fielder, allowing Lloyd to cross home.

The Buccaneers only scored once more in the contest, putting up a run in the fourth. After Arthur laid down a bunt and reached because of an error by the third baseman, Corazzini would eventually plate a run to the make the score 4-2.

Curry tallied two straight runs from errors committed in the field and then drew a bases-loaded walk to go up five. A sacrifice fly from Lloyd to score Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.) pushed the score to 8-2 at the end of four innings.

The Colonels put up two runs in the fifth inning to stop the game due to the mercy rule. A single from Sophia Marchant (Everett, Mass.) plated Forte and a single from Colleran scored Marchant to secure the 10-2 victory.

Dimond and Colleran each put up two hits for Curry.

Cochrane registered two hits to lead the way for Mass Maritime.

Rebecca Black (East Greenwich, R.I.) recorded the win in the circle. She threw four innings while giving up two runs on five hits.

Thomas was given the loss, being tagged with 10 runs on 10 hits while striking out three and walking four.

Curry now awaits for the announcement of their postseason opponent, which will take place later this week. Mass Maritime will travel to Bridgewater State on Tuesday for a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
