Softball Falls to UNE in CCC Doubleheader

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the University of New England on Wednesday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field. The Nor'easters took game one in a shutout, 2-0 and then captured the nightcap in extras, topping the Colonels 5-4 in nine innings.

Game One – University of New England 2, Curry 0

UNE got on the board in the second, tallying both of their runs in the contest. Meg Harvey (Westmoreland, N.H.) opened the scoring with an RBI single to center. The base knock was deep enough to score Alexis Kapsambelis (Merrimack, N.H.) after a misplay from the center fielder.

Later in the frame, Caty Flagg (Methuen, Mass.) tallied a single to right with two on. The hit plated Harvey to go up 2-0.

The contest would not feature any more scoring as the teams combined for eight total hits after the first inning.

Flagg went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI to lead the way for the University of New England. Kapsambelis was the only other student-athlete for the Nor'easters to record multiple hits.

Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.) and Jordan Perzan (Burlington, Conn.) each had a hit to close the offensive output for Curry.

Sydnee Bessler (Everett, Mass.) secured the victory in the circle for UNE. She went the distance, while only giving up two hits and striking out 11. Lambert was tagged with the loss, surrendering two runs on eight hits. Additionally, she struck out seven and walked just one.

Game Two – University of New England 5, Curry 4 (9 innings)

The University of New England was the first to strike once again, this time in the fourth inning of game two. Sarah Lachapelle (Gilford, N.H.) singled to center field which helped score Andrea Gosper (Wyoming, R.I.). Kapsambelis followed with an RBI double to left to plate Caroline Schoenbucher (Barrington, N.H.).

The Colonels were able to get both runs back on the same play in the fifth frame. After Carolyn Lynch (Ipswich, Mass.) laid down a bunt, a fielding error by the catcher allowed her to reach and scored Talia Forte (North Scituate, R.I.) and Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.). With the game tied at two at the end of regulation, the contest headed to extras.

The next scoring of the game came in the eighth. Schoenbucher broke the tie as she reached on an error by the pitcher, allowing Hannah Baldyga (Goffstown, N.H.) to cross home to put the visitors up, 3-2. In the home half of the eighth Oatway delivered the equalizer as she grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Perzan to score.

The Nor'easters broke the tie in the top of the ninth on a two-run homer from Kapsambelis to put UNE up 5-3. Curry was able to get one back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Forte, but the Colonels were unable to get the tying run across.

Gosper paced the University of New England with hits in all three plate appearances. Kapsambelis tallied two hits in the nightcap to be the only other Nor'easter with multiple hits.

Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.) and Newcomb each put up two hits each to pace Curry.

Bessler picked up her second win of the day, once again going the distance. She allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out two and walking none. Rebecca Black (East Greenwich, R.I.) was credited with the loss. Black tossed eight and a third innings while giving up five runs on seven hits. She fanned one and walked two.
