Softball Splits Doubleheader At Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Curry College softball team split a doubleheader with Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play, grabbing a 4-3 victory in game one before dropping the nightcap by an 8-3 final.

The Colonels had three hits in the opener, but collected them all in the top of the third along with two hit batsmen, and scored four runs on back-to-back base hits by Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.) and Kiana Lloyd (Worcester, Mass.).

Salve Regina scratched back with a single run in the fifth and a pair in the sixth but stranded the game-tying run at third base in the seventh. Nelson, who no-hit the Colonels over the final 4.1 innings of the opener, started the nightcap and held the visitors hitless through the first 3.2 frames. Meanwhile, the Seahawks built a 5-0 lead and then 8-2, highlighted by 3-run innings in the fourth and fifth.

Turning Points

Curry capitalized on its only three hits in the third inning of the opener, scoring four runs in the frame. Nelson allowed just two Colonels to reach base in the first four innings of the nightcap as her teammates built a 5-0 lead (one in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth).

Quick Hits

Curry senior starting pitcher Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.) went 4.2 innings in the opener to pick up her third victory (3-4).

Salve Regina freshman Jaycee Garrigan (Uxbridge, Mass.) had a pair of hits in each game, scored two runs and drove in another.

Seahawks had four stolen bases on the day - all in the game one loss - by four different players: Florent, Garrigan, Francesca Galeazzi (Lynn, Mass.), and Maddie Machado (Westport, Mass.).

Courtney Latta (Lowell, Mass.) pitched another scoreless inning in relief.

Colonel reliever Allison May (West Bridgewater, Mass.) did not allow a baserunner in 1.2 innings pitched.
