Softball Picks Up Sweep Of Wheelock in Non-League Action

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College softball team picked up a sweep of visiting Wheelock College in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field. The Colonels took game one by a final of 13-0 in five innings and then won the nightcap, 7-0. Curry improves to 14-16 overall while Wheelock falls to 1-23.

Game One

The Colonels were the first to strike in the opener, tallying two in the bottom of the first. Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.) hit a two-run double which plated Mikayla Korona (Bellingham, Mass.) and Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.).

Curry broke the contest open in the bottom of the second, registering eight runs. Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.) got the frame started with a two-RBI double to center to score Korona and Bruno. Michaela Colleran (East Bridgewater, Mass.) continued the inning with a one run single to left that scored Lambert. Rachel Byrd (Hampstead, N.H.) followed with a two-run homer to left to make it 7-0. The big inning continued when Bruno stepped to the dish and knocked a two RBI single to right to plate Madeline Critch (Halifax, Mass.) and Jess Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) The Colonels capped the frame when Carolyn Lynch (Ipswich, Mass.) scored on throwing error by Rachel Simpson (Littleton, Mass.).

The Colonels then tacked on three more in the bottom of the third to capture the game 13-0 in a mercy rule situation in five innings. RBI hits by Byrd and Saluti made the contest 12-0 and then a double by Bruno to left to score Saluti gave Curry their final run.

Bruno and Saluti led the way for the Colonels, registering three hits apiece. Oatway, Colleran and Byrd added two hits each while Korona, Lambert and Lynch had one apiece to close the column. Lacey Allen (Gloucester, Mass.) tallied the lone hit for Wheelock.

McKenna Barlow (Middletown, R.I.) picked up the victory in the circle, going the distance while only allowing one hit. She walked none and struck out four in the win. Maggie Doyle (Kingston, Mass.) was credited the loss. She went seven innings while striking out two and walking four.

Game Two

Curry got on the scoreboard first in the nightcap, thanks to an RBI single to left field by Bruno in the second to plate Molly Horn (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) to make it a 1-0 ball game.

Morgan Bogardus (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) would score in the fourth after Oatway reached on an error by Shannon Creedon (Woodstock, Conn.) to increase the lead to 2-0. In the same frame, Byrd converted a two-RBI single to left to score Colleran, Oatway and Bruno.

The Colonels tacked on two in the fifth, by way of a two-RBI single to center to plate Hanna Fleming (Clinton, Mass.) and Horn as Curry took game two by a 7-0 final.

Bruno paced the Colonels with three hits and three runs batted in. Four other Curry student-athletes had a hit apiece to cap the category. Katie Walsh (East Islip, N.Y.) and Doyle recorded a hit each for the Wildcats.

Rebecca Black (East Greenwich, R.I.) was credited the win for the Colonels. She went seven innings while only allowing two hits. She also struck out five. Hanna Gootee (Hampton, N.H.) picked up the loss, going six innings. She gave up seven runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking five.

Curry will return to the field on Thursday when they host Bridgewater State in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. Wheelock will next play Saturday at Lesley in a doubleheader starting at noon.
