Softball Swept By Roger Williams in CCC Action

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry softball team was swept by Roger Williams in a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field. The Hawks captured game one 6-3 in eight innings and then took game two by a 9-2 final to complete the sweep. Roger Williams moves to 15-10 overall and 7-1 in the CCC while the Colonels fall to 9-11 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

GAME ONE

Curry got on the board in the top of the first, thanks to a bases loaded walk drew by Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.) that sent Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.) home to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead. Rachel Byrd (Hampstead, N.H.) pitched in a sacrifice fly to center to score Mikayla Korona (Bellingham, Mass.) to make it a 2-0 lead.

Roger Williams answered with two runs of their own in the top of the second to knot the scoring. Juliet Hulme (Duxbury, Mass.) singled to center and advanced to second on an error by the Curry shortstop. The error allowed Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.) to score to put the first runs on the board for the visitors. They tacked on another with an RBI single to right by Taylor Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) that sent Hulme home.

The contest remained a stalemate until the teams headed to extras. The Hawks tallied four runs in the top of the eighth, three of which came on an error by the Curry right fielder. Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.) reached first on the error and then advanced to second. Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.), Meredith Moise (North Reading, Mass.) and Taylor Chatowsky scored on the same play. Roger Williams tallied one more in the frame, thanks to an RBI single by Grosso to close out the scoring for the visitors.

The Colonels got one run back in the bottom of the eighth after Mikayla Colleran (East Bridgewater, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to center which scored Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.) to make it a 6-3 final.

Five Colonels pitched in one hit apiece to round out the offensive output. Oatway, Colleran and Byrd tallied RBI's while Bruno, Korona and Lambert scored the Curry runs.

Grosso paced Roger Williams with a 2-for-4 game at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. Tara Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) pitched in two hits as well. Vesce led the way with game-high three runs batted in.

Hulme picked up the win in the circle, tossing a complete game. She gave up three runs on five hits while striking out two and walking three. Lambert pitched a complete game of her own and was credited with the loss. She surrendered six runs on eight hits while recording four strikeouts.

GAME TWO

Roger Williams was the first to strike in game two with RBI hits by Vesce and Grosso in the first.

Vesce then contributed a single to center in the third to score Ledbetter to make it a 3-0 lead.

The Hawks then tacked on two runs in fourth. Taylor Chatowsky started the frame with a homer to left field and then Ledbetter tallied an RBI single to center which scored Alicia McCauley (North Reading, Mass.) to move the score to fourth.

Curry got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Lambert converted a sacrifice fly to short which helped score Hanna Fleming (Clinton, Conn.). Oatway closed the frame with an RBI single to center which to send Bruno home.

Roger Williams tallied four insurance runs in the sixth to take the game by a 9-2 final.

Lambert and Jess Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) paced the Colonels with two hits apiece. Five other Colonels registered a hit apiece to round out the column.

Moise paced Roger Williams with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with two runs scored in the nightcap. Ledbetter, Grosso and Taylor Chatowsky each finished with two hits.

Rachel Wandzilak (West Islip, N.Y.) picked up the win for the Hawks, going six innings. She gave up two runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out five. Jordan Lizotte (Rehoboth, Mass.) was credited the loss, tossing four innings and giving up five runs on seven hits. She walked two in her third loss of the season.

Curry continues its home schedule Sunday for a CCC doubleheader against Western New England starting at 1:00 p.m. Roger Williams will head to Gordon on Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
