Bristol, RI- The Roger Williams University Softball team took two wins on Sunday afternoon as the Hawks took on Curry College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader at the Hawks senior day. The Hawks won the first game 8-4 and the second game 8-1.
Game One RWU 8 CC 4
The Hawks built an early lead against Curry College, scoring four runs in the first inning, en route to a 8-4 win on Sunday.
The Hawks scored in the first on an error, a two-run double by Meg Maliga, and an RBI single by Valerie Moran.
The Hawks was led by Taylor Messier's hitting. Messier went 3-4 and scored three runs. She singled in the first and second innings and tripled in the third inning.
Maliga got it done in the circle on the way to a win. She allowed four runs over seven innings. Maliga struck out six, walked two and gave up 10 hits.
McKenna Barlow took the loss for Curry College. She lasted just five innings, walked one, struck out one, and allowed five runs.
The top of the first saw Curry College take an early lead, 1-0. Curry College's threat began with a single by Mikayla Lambert. Then moved Mikayla Lambert from first to second. Kevi Oatway singled, scoring Mikayla Lambert.
The Hawks piled on three more runs in the bottom of the second. Mikaela Grossostarted the inning with a single, bringing home Messier.
One run in the top of the fourth helped Curry College close its deficit to 8-2. An RBI single by Mikayla Lambert sparked Curry College's rally. Maliga ended the inning by getting Rachel Byrd to.
After pushing across two runs in the top of the fifth, Curry College faced just a 8-4 deficit. An RBI single by Amy Nolan and an RBI single by Marissa Bruno gave Curry College life. Finally, Maliga got April Adams to ground out to end the threat.
Game Two RWU 8 CC 1
Juliet Hulme was on the mound for the Hawks and got the win in the second game.
Bruno would get the only run for Curry in the first inning with a homer.
The Hawks would score in the bottom of the second inning from Meghan Maglia on a single to center field by Valeria Moran. Alicia McCauley would also score from a fielders choice to the short stop by Juliet Hulme.
The Hawks would score again in the bottom of the third by Vesce on a hit sacrifice ball to score score Macaela Phol. Hulme would single to center field to advance Maglia to third. Maglia would also score on the last play of the inning to put the Hawks at 5-1 going into the top of the 4th inning.
Meredith Moise would then score in the bottom of the fifth inning by a single to right field by Pohl. Pohl would also score by a single to center field by Julianna Vesce. The Hawks would go on to win the second game of their double header 8-1.
The Colonels are now 13-23 overall and 4-14 in conference.
Curry returns to the diamond on Thursday, April 28 as the host Suffolk University for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
