Curry Colonels Drop Game One 2-0, Bounce Back and Walk Off 5-4 Against Fitchburg State in Non-Conference Doubleheader

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Fitchburg State University Wednesday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field. The Colonels improve to 11-9 on the season while the Falcons finish the day 11-9 overall.

Game One

The Falcons jumped out to an early lead on a two-run homerun from Sophomore Emily Comtois (Windham, N.H.) which plated Freshman Maddie Medina (Pelham, N.H.). That would be all Fitchburg State would need as the game turned into a pitcher's duel.

Sophomore Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.)  took the loss for the Colonels, going seven strong innings while surrendering three hits and striking out one. Junior Galen Kerr (Concord, Mass.) got the win for the Falcons, also throwing seven innings, allowing just one hit and striking out 11.

Game Two

In the night cap, Fitchburg again jumped out to an early lead. Junior Jessalynne Brown (Malden, Mass.) singled up the middle, driving in Senior Marissa Gemma (Leominster, Mass.). Curry answered in the bottom half of the frame when Lambert hit a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Senior Amy Nolan (Norfolk, Mass.).

Fitchburg St. would tack on the next two runs of the game to open up a 3-1 lead. Senior Tori Cyrus hit a solo homerun in the top of the third inning to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead. In the top half of the sixth inning, Brown drew a walk and tried to steal second. As a rundown occurred between first and second base, Sophomore Jill Schultze (Winchendon, Mass.) stole home.

Junior Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.) hit a solo shot to deep center to cut the deficit down to one run, 3-2. In the bottom half of the seventh, Lambert hit a double to deep left field, plating Nolan and knotting the game at 3-3.

Fitchburg scored one run in the top half of the eighth inning, a single by Comtois that drove home Medina. Curry responded in the bottom half of the frame; Sophomore Jessica Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) hit a RBI single to drive in pinch runner Junior McKenna Barlow (Middletown, R.I.). With two outs, Nolan dropped a single into left field allowing Bruno to score and give the Colonels a walk off victory.

Sophomore Jordan Lizotte picked up the victory for the Colonels, going the distance, throwing eight innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out five. Kerr took the loss for the Falcons in relief, pitching two innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out three. Freshman Kaylee Sylvestre took a no-decision for the Falcons, starting the game and pitching five and two thirds of an inning, allowing two runs while scattering nine hits and striking out nine.
