MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College softball team split a conference doubleheader with Gordon College Saturday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field. The Colonels improve to 10-6 on the season while the Fighting Scots fall to 4-15-1 overall.

Game One

The first game was started off as a back and forth affair, with each team answering each other on the scoreboard. Gordon jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with the first run coming off of a double from Marissa Meenan, scoring Megan Jenkerson. Sarah Ryder grounded out to the shortstop which allowed Meenan to cross the plate.

In the bottom of the second, Curry finally got onto the board when Sophomore Morgan Haaland (Fairhaven, Mass.) grounded out to second, pushing Junior Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.) across. Sophomore April Adams (Burlington, Mass.) followed up with a double, driving in Senior Amy Nolan (Norfolk, Mass.) and sophomore Jessica Saluti (Braintree, Mass.).

Both teams but runs on the board in the third inning, the first coming off a steal by Ryder which allowed Meenan to come score for Gordon, tying the game at three. Emily Kline hit a double that brought Ryder around from second to give the Fighting Scots a 4-3 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Haaland drew a bases loaded walk plating Sophomore Rachel Byrd (Hampstead, N.H.) drawing the score even once again.

In the top half of the seventh, Meehan doubled, knocking in Megan Jenkerson and Alyssa Unumb. Ryder singled scoring Meenan. Carleigh Peterson singled to knock in Ryder and give Gordon an 8-4 lead. Curry could only muster up one run in the bottom half of the inning, giving Gordon the 8-5 victory. Emily Kline went the distance for Gordon, allowing five runs on ten hits, striking out four and issued 3 walks. Mikayla Lambert took the loss for the Colonels, going sixth and a third innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits while striking out seven.

Game Two

The night cap started off similar to game one, with both teams answering each other on the score board. Gordon jumped out to a 3-0 lead on an RBI single from Ryder and a two-run homerun from Kline. In the bottom half of the inning, Bruno reached on an error by the third baseman which allowed Junior Mikayla Korona (Bellingham, Mass.) to cross the plate. Saluti followed with an RBI single to plate Lambert. Sophomore Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.) struck out but reached first on a wild pitch, which also allowed Byrd to score, knotting the game a 3-3.

Korona reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the second inning, which allowed Nolan to score and give the Colonels a 4-3 lead. The Fighting Scots responded in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Emily Burkhart. The Colonels added three more runs in the bottom half of the frame, the first coming on a passed ball allowing Adams to score. Byrd and Oatway both had RBI singles in the inning.

Meenan hit an RBI single in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 7-5 Curry, but the Colonels responded with three of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Korona singled to drive in Adams and Nolan and Bruno followed suit with a single of her own, driving in Korona. Curry added two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth, Nolan grounded out allowing Oatway to score and Korona hit a home run to make the score 12-5. Gordon could only get one run in the top of the seventh, giving Curry the 12-6 victory.

Sophomore Rebecca Black (East Greenwich, R.I.) picked up the victory for the Colonles, pitching seven innings, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out four. Abigail Knowlton took the loss for Gordon, allowing 12 runs on 15 hits and striking out two.

Curry returns to action in a conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon when they travel to Nichols College. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Gordon returns to the field Monday when they host Salve Regina in a conference doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 PM.
