Softball Drops a Pair to First-Place Western New England

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Western New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Thursday afternoon in Milton. WNE captured the opener, 5-3, then completed the sweep with a five-inning 10-0 victory in the nightcap. The first-place Golden Bears are now 19-6 overall and 11-1 in league play. The Colonels slip to 8-13 overall and 5-7 in CCC action.

GAME ONE

Western New England broke on top 1-0 in the top of the second on an RBI double by junior Heidi Grieger. Curry responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second. Freshman Kevi Oatway opened the frame with a single, then came around to score on a home run by sophomore Kelly Duggan. It remained 2-1 Colonels until the top of the sixth, when the Golden Bears pulled even on an RBI single by junior McKenzie Pezze.

An inning later, the visitors plated three runs to take a 5-2 lead. Sophomore Corianna DeLisi led off the inning with a home run, followed by a sacrifice fly from senior Emily Mastropaolo, and another run-scoring base hit from Pezze. Curry cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh on a pinch-hit RBI single by Caitlin Blanchard, but could pull no closer.

Grieger (9-5) picked up the win for WNE, going the distance, surrendering 11 hits, three earned runs and one walk, while striking out one. Senior Taylor Ahearn fell to 5-6 on the season after giving up 11 hits, five earned runs, and four walks, while fanning three in her seven innings of work.

GAME TWO

Senior Lauren Zambrano (10-1) threw a five-inning no-hitter, walking two while striking out 12. The Golden Bears' offense exploded for eight first-inning runs. Senior Grace Kucharski drove the first run home with an RBI single to center. Zambrano would later double home a pair to put her team ahead 5-0. DeLisi would also bring two home on a single to center that made the score 8-0. Senior Samantha Mulhern closed out the scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the third.

Freshman Mikayla Lambert (3-3) absorbed the loss, lasting just 1/3 of an inning. She allowed six hits, seven earned runs, and one walk. Classmate Jordan Lizotte came on in relief, tossing 3 1/3 innings, surrendering seven hits, two earned runs, and three walks while fanning six.

Both teams return to CCC action on Saturday, with Western New England hosting Salve Regina and Curry traveling to the University of New England.
