MILTON, Mass. – Curry College swept visiting Wentworth in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels posted both wins in five innings, 10-1 in the opener and 9-1 in the nightcap. Curry is now 20-12 overall and 10-4 in league action. The Leopards wrap up their season at 6-28 overall and 0-18 in CCC play.
GAME 1
Wentworth broke on top in the first frame as junor Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) launched a solo home run to left field.
The Colonels proceeded to score 10 unanswered runs over the next four innings. In the bottom of the first, the hosts received RBI hits from junior Allie Carver (Marlborough, Mass.) and senior Paige Smigiel (Lisbon, Conn.), and an RBI fielder's choice from freshman Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.).
Curry stretched its lead to 5-1, courtesy of a second-inning, two-run single from senior Kaitlyn Maderios (East Bridgewater, Mass.), then broke the game open with a five-run fourth. The freshman trio of Sarah Stone (Littleton, Mass.), Mikayla Korona (Bellingham, Mass.) and Meaghan Leary (Andover, Mass.), and senior Heather Carrier (Scarborough, Maine), each drove home a run.
Junior Taylor Ahearn (Salem, Mass.) went the distance to improve her record to 13-4. She allowed two hits, five walks, and one earned run while striking out six over five innings. Senior Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.) took the loss, tossing four innings and surrendering 10 hits, five walks and six earned runs. She fanned one.
GAME 2
In the nightcap, the Colonels plated three runs in each of their first two at-bats. The second-inning highlight was a two-run blast off the bat of senior Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.).
Trailing 7-0 in the top of the fourth, the Leopards got on the board via an RBI single from junior Isabella Grassetti (Monson, Mass.) that scored junior Anne Harris (Germantown, Md.).
Freshman McKenna Barlow (Middletown, R.I.) picked up the win to move to 3-1 on the season. She gave up four hits, two walks and one earned run, striking out six in her five innings of work. Freshman starter Maya Bloom (Hopkinton, N.H.) absorbed the loss, closing out her rookie campaign with a 2-8 record.
Curry will travel to Western New England on Thursday for a CCC twin bill starting at 3 p.m.
