Current Players Defeat Former Players in 15th Annual Alumni Softball Game; Colonels Draft Team IMPACT's Lauren Dunn as Top Recruit

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College Softball Program held its 15th Alumni game on Sunday, September 29. There were 18 softball alumni who returned to the diamond ready for action. A pre-game ceremony featured the recognition of several players and the academic awards they earned last season. Coach Weckworth was then thrilled to have the "Draft Day" signing of Lauren Dunn to the current team. This signing was made possible through the efforts of Team IMPACT.

Team IMPACT is a non-profit chartered to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening illnesses. Team IMPACT children are drafted onto local college athletic teams and, to the greatest extent possible, become an official member of the team for the duration of their treatment and beyond.

Prior to the start of the game, Lisa Bello '04 inspired the crowd with a pre-recorded version of our National Anthem. The alumni squad banged out eight hits, including a first-inning double by Amanda Peters '11. Later in the third inning, there were back-to-back singles by sisters Christina Sancinito '09 and Maria Sancinito '06, but the solid pitching trio of Jennifer Lundstrom '14, Taylor Ahearn '15 and rookie McKenna Barlow '17, kept the rest of their bats in check.

The current team had seven hits and took advantage of a three-run first inning to come away with a 5-1 victory. Ariel LaRosa '15 led the offense with two hits while Marissa Bruno '17 wowed the crowd with a booming double in the fourth inning.

Kim Sturgis '07 returned to the mound for the alumni and delivered a strong pitching effort. Sturgis was recently selected for the Curry College Athletic Hall of Fame and will be inducted in November of this year. Joneiha Veiga '12 and Amanda Felzmann '13 played solid games in the infield and Emily Taylor '07 tracked down some fly balls in the outfield.

It was a reunion of former Commonwealth Coast Conference All-Star players, Curry College Athletic Hall of Fame member Leanne Tarkanian '00 and many former Team Captains.  There were many other great players present and they enjoyed a great day of softball. It certainly was an exciting game with plenty of laughs as well.  A post-game pizza picnic for about 115 people was held at the field to wrap up the day.

Said Head Coach Bruce R. Weckworth '82: "The Curry College Softball Program would like to thank all the players who made it back for this great day of softball and would like to invite you to attend some of our games in the Spring. Perhaps one more Spring Break Trip to Fort Myers, Florida would do the trick. If you were unable to make it to the Alumni Game this year, plan on joining us next year. It's a really good time!"
