Softball Defeats Salve Regina, 8-2, But is Knocked Out of CCC Tournament After 2-1, 10-Inning Loss to WNE

WENHAM, Mass. – In Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Softball Tournament action at Gordon College, #6 Curry stayed alive with an 8-2 win against #5 Salve Regina, but was eliminated after a 2-1, 10-inning loss to #3 Western New England. The Colonels are now 24-18.

In the win against the Seahawks, Curry put up seven runs in the top of the first. Mikaela Carney started the offensive onslaught with a two-run single. That was followed by a Taryn Vigeant RBI double, and an Allie Carver run-scoring single. The inning was then capped by a bases-clearing double by Megan Flaherty.

Salve Regina managed single runs in the first and second innings off Colonels’ starter Jennifer Lundstrom. But the junior hurler shut down the Seahawks the rest of the way, improving her season record to 9-7.

In the extra-inning loss to the Golden Bears, Taylor Ahearn and Melissa Donoghue combined to keep the Western New England offense quiet.

Curry took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI double by Paige Smigiel that scored Kaitlyn Maderios. The Golden Bears pulled even off of Ahearn in the bottom of the fourth, but the pitchers dominated into the bottom of the 10th, when an outfield error allowed Western New England to plate the winning run. Donoghue took the tough-luck loss, falling to 7-3 on the season.

The Colonels will now await the selections for the 2013 ECAC Division III New England Tournament which begins next week.
