Softball Drops a Pair to Visiting Western New England in CCC Action

MILTON, Mass. - Sophomore Lauren Zambrano (Wallingford, Conn.) tossed a perfect game in the nightcap of Western New England’s sweep of Curry in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball action Saturday afternoon in Milton. The Golden Bears won the opener, 3-2, in 11 innings before Zambrano shut down the Colonels, 2-0, in game two. WNE is now 23-14 overall and 13-3 in CCC action. Curry slips to 20-16 overall and 7-9 in league play.

In the opener, the two teams traded single runs in the third inning. The Golden Bears tally came courtesy of an RBI groundout by freshman Leah Torre (Guilford, Conn.) that plated sophomore Hannah Hill (Malden, Mass.). The Colonels got their run after junior Paige Smigiel (Versailles, Conn.) led off with an infield single and later scored on a wild pitch.

Torre and freshman Heidi Grieger (Hyde Park, N.Y.), along with Curry sophomore Taylor Ahearn (Salem, Mass.), kept the game scoreless for the next seven innings from the circle.

In the top of the 11th, senior Laura Madaio (Paxton, Mass.) was placed on second and brought home on a fielder’s choice by junior Maria Francese (Hinsdale, Mass.). Sophomore Samantha Mulhern (Worcester, Mass.) then brought home what proved to be the winning run on a squeeze bunt that plated Francese.

The Colonels threatened in the bottom of the 11th, closing to within a run after a base hit by Smigiel brought home junior Taryn Vigeant (Terryville, Conn.).

Grieger (3-4) earned the win in relief, going the last four innings, allowing four hits and an earned run. Ahearn (8-7) was the hard-luck loser, hurling all 11 innings, surrendering 10 hits, two walks and one earned run while striking out 10.

In the nightcap, it was 21 up and 21 down for Zambrano, who struck out seven on the way to improving her record to 15-4. WNE got the only two runs of the game in the top of the third. Zambrano helped her own cause with an RBI double, and later scored on a groundout by Madaio.

Curry junior Jennifer Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) fell to 6-7 despite a strong outing. She threw all seven innings, allowing three hits, three walks, and two earned runs while fanning nine.

The Golden Bears wrap up the regular season on Sunday, hosting Roger Williams for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The Colonels play their final regular-season twin bill at Gordon on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
