MILTON, Mass. – Curry College picked up a pair of wins against visiting Nichols College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels took game one, 5-1, and game two, 6-0.
Sophomore Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in game one to lead the Colonels (17-11, 7-5 CCC) before junior Kaitlyn Maderios (East Bridgewater, Mass.) drove in two on a pair of sac flies in game two.
Sophomore Avery Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.) belted a solo home run in the sixth inning of game one for Nichols (4-20, 2-8 CCC) while junior Emalee Watkins (Malden, Mass.), junior Rebecca Palmarozza (Hamden, Conn.), and sophomore Janine Coleman (Roslindale, Mass.) also recorded one hit in game one. Watkins recorded two more hits in game two.
In game one, LaRosa’s three-run blast to left-center broke a scoreless tie and gave Curry a 3-0 lead after three. The Colonels tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth to increase their lead to 5-0 before Orszulak’s home run capped the scoring.
Freshman Melissa Donoghue (Malden, Mass.) was credited with the win for the home team as she surrendered four hits and one run with four strikeouts in seven innings of work. Freshman Danielle White (Boston, Mass.) took the loss for the Bison in the opener, allowing six hits and five runs over six innings.
The Colonels struck for two runs in the first inning of game two – highlighted by an RBI single by sophomore Allie Carver (Marlborough, Mass.) – and Maderios’ first sac fly in the fourth pushed their lead to 3-0. Carver led off the fifth with a single and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0, and the Colonels went on to score one more in the frame and one in the sixth to account for the final score.
Junior Jennifer Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) improved to 6-5 with the win for Curry, holding the Bison to two hits over four innings. Sophomore Taylor Ferrazzi (Ashland, Mass.) took the loss for Nichols in game two as she allowed one hit and two runs in 0.2 innings. She walked two and did not record a strikeout.
The Colonels head to Endicott for a noon doubleheader tomorrow, while Nichols returns to action on Monday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against CCC foe Gordon.
